it also sort of reminds me of Elevator/Cat Like Thief by Box Car Racer. not a bad thing, imo.

I'm waiting for the whole album to make a definitive opinion, but the new song is absolute crap. Also, since when do Mark and Tom sound similar when they sing?

Song reminds me of Easy Target from the self/titled record mixed with some AVA song that was a single a few years ago. I think it's alright.

Also, since when do Mark and Tom sound similar when they sing? Right? That was just bizarre. At first I liked it well enough (though was still pretty nonplussed), but after several more listens I'm kind of embarrassed that I even liked it that much at first, haha. It blows my mind that anyone could think this even remotely compares to a single song on s/t. I'm still pretty sure I'll at least really like some of the album, though.

I just hope the next song is more of a Mark song.

Ha, somebody on OMB pointed out that it was an old riff from the S/T session:
3:23
Tom must have been annoyed that it didn't make that album.

But even yours was saying it was like that + AVA, not straight s/t. I do like some parts of the song I just think it's kind of a "file under 'mediocre radio rock'" sound for the most part.

I never noticed it before, but isn't it weird how many Screeching Weasel songs are discouraging activism?

hahaha how is that weird? Ben Weasel is a bigoted fuck. What's more weird is the few songs of theirs that are wannabe-political.

I know he's a big conservative (being a not "punk" punk is the punkest thing evar) but why devote so much energy to telling people not to care about stuff? Maybe he was afraid to write songs about how much he loved Reagan.

The new Basement album is awesome. It's like the new Title Fight record, except good.

I don't listen to new music :-( There's so many bands here I just have never heard of.
But what I came in here to post, was I totally lump The Get Up Kids into this genre, and I've been listening to Something to Write Home About a lot recently. Mostly because it's a summer album, also because it's fantastic. I'd probably lump it into my 10 favorite albums ever. It touches every base for me: the music is great, it holds up, it speaks to different areas of my life.
So good. I also think it epitomizes what I like most in my pop punk, which is sincerity. I don't care how awkward or goofy the lyrics, as long as it's doing it all out.

I've been on a Get Up Kids kick recently too! I also considered most of their stuff as pop-punk or at least everything up to On A Wire. Something To Write Home About was my favorite for the longest time but lately I have been loving On A Wire and Guilt Show (which I think is super underrated). Their newest is pretty good too abut a little bit "weird" for them on first listen.

I love Something To Write Home About, but I started listening to them because of Four Minute Mile and it'll always be my favourite.

Almost everything they've done is fantastic. I switched to team On a Wire for a year or two as I was finishing/exiting college. Guilt Show is pretty excellent, too.
Sadly, I did not know they had come out with a new album. I thought they had broken up.

They reunited recently and released There Are Rules earlier this year. It's great but pretty different for them. Also, this reminds me of how LATE I was getting into this band. Always liked them but earlier this year is when I really started to love them.
Jim's side project, Blackpool Lights isn't bad either.

I'm a sucker for all TGUK side projects. New Amsterdam, Reggie and the Full Effect, whatever. Sadly, it took me almost two years to realize that New Amsterdams were a TGUK side project.
I guess it's also no stretch to say, that I used to listen to bands just because they were on Vagrant. It's almost never let me down.
Four Minute Mile is so good - Stay Gold, Ponyboy is my favorite song off there.

I've always filed them under emo rather than pop-punk, but who cares about genre, TGUK rule.
There Are Rules really didn't hold up though. It was alright while listening but I never, ever get an urge to listen to it and I don't think I ever will again. But they have plenty of 5-star albums to tide me over.

Rediscovering the Mr. T Experience right now. Dr. Frank is so clever.

I still have Songs Not To Get Married to somewhere in my room, or at least I hope I do. Never listened to that album enough but I remember liking it. Wes - That was my opinion of it for awhile but it just clicked with me one day. I don't know, I'm just cool with whatever they want to do now haha. I'm going to listen to Stay What You Are Later tonight because of this thread and it's been way too long since my last listen.

i liked the Simple Science EP a lot more than There Are Rules, but i thought TAR was an okay album. Something To Write Home About will always be one of my favorite albums though.

hahaha, I like Shed! What's the new Basement album called? Shed is ok, but it's not catchy at all. Which is what I love about their old material. The Basement album is called I Wish I Could Stay Here. It's quickly becoming one of my favorites of the year.
