I loved this movie. Yeah the message is heavy-handed and some of the dialogue was iffy but overall this is one of the best experiences I've had at the movies. I couldn't believe it when my best friend told me that two and a half hours had passed because I was so enthralled. I'm one of those impatient folks who can't stand long movies but this was so engaging that I never once got impatient or bored.
And yes the plot is simple but with everything going on I think it would have been too hard to follow if there had been a convoluted plot.
I can see the point about the White Man's Guilt but I really think Cameron has his heart in the right place. Yeah, yeah, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" but, the obvious parallels with the Native Americans aside, I couldn't see it ending any other way. Perhaps I'm merely simple and uncreative but for me the plot just worked.
So yeah, I loved this movie. I have a feeling it is going to be a favorite of mine for years to come.

Just returned from the movies. Verdict: very good film. Nothing really bad to say about it and I was entertained the whole way through. The visuals are indeed stunning and the setting itself was well thought out. Very fantastical. I don't think I liked it as much as others here did, though. 4 out of 5 stars.

Saw it last night. I enjoyed it. I was surprised that I enjoyed it for more than just the visual aspects. Only major bad thing was that the 3-D kinda gave me a headache.

So the dialogue, plot, acting and characterisation was shit. Was very pretty to look at though, and Zoe Saldana was good. My flatmate who I saw it with is a music teacher and she said the soundtrack was for shit. The chord progression was exactly the same as Titanic. Speaking of THE SEX SCENE jesus christ no thank you Although I would probs do Sam Worthington as a blue man but not as his real life self Sam Wothington what is your accent situation sort it out mate. The message was so fucking heavy handed yes ok James Cameron I can understand stuff you don't have to literally hit me in my face with your gaia message. EXCHANGE OF ENERGY THE PLANET IS ALIVE WE ARE ALL CONNECTED HUMANS ARE DICKS I am not an idiot James Cameron please trust me to understand also it could def have benefitted from A FUCKING EDITOR. Cut that shit down James Cameron. Shame it was the same plot as every disney film ever. MUFASA DIES AND SAM WORTHINGTON BECOMES THE LION KING. These are my thoughts on the film by the way. That's more or less my opinion of it. *****SPOILERS AHEAD SPOILERS AHEAD***** Good: -Visual effects. Duh. I'll be a Debbie Downer and say that it didn't exactly make me jizz myself the way it did for other people, but it was impressive and it's obviously going to change a lot of things about how movies are made. The 3D was a little "OH HEY LOOK AT THIS" sometimes, but otherwise it was well-incorporated -All of the crazy animals were awesome. -The acting was, for the most part, pretty good. Jake's dialogue was shit, but Zoe Saldana was good, and I liked Sigourney Weaver's character. -I like that they didn't take up a ton of time in the beginning explaining things. I hate when movies do that. -I would do unspeakably sexy things to Michelle Rodriguez. Bad: -Yes, the white guilt thing is pretty fucking bad. Everyone's running scared after the first attack, and totally helpless until the big strong white guy comes and saves them. Ugh. -The main villain (the colonel) was cartoonishly over-the-top. I was laughing when he jumped out of the burning plane in his mech suit. Jesus christ. -A lot of parts took way too long, especially around the middle. I didn't really want to see all the native people get slaughtered, but after a while when the military guys started gearing up I was like "FINALLY, stuff's gonna start exploding." -The story as a whole was insanely predictable, and there were a ton of cliches. Yes, I know, nearly every movie is derivative of something else, but it was too much in this one. -Nitpicky plot hole stuff: They said in the beginning that the natives were hard to kill because of carbon fiber or some shit, but the bad guys didn't seem to have any trouble mowing them down. -"Unobtanium?" Come the fuck on.

totally helpless until the big strong white guy comes and saves them Except that he was blue. Loved the movie. The dude who was in charge of the whole thing reminded me of our oil situation. Someone goes after something they want with complete disregard for any life/culture, and doesn't care about the lives spent. Overall, I really loved it though.

I work at my local cinema, and we're still selling out sessions for Avatar. We checked the computer last night, and so far we've had 500,000 ticket sales to it. We're a smallish city, and one of at least fifteen cinemas in the overall metropolitan area. Insane.

I just find it overall amusing. One would think that it would probably be better if people worshiped nature instead of an unproven singular entity. A lot of humanity's problems would probably not exist if that were the case.

This wasn't a bad movie, it just wasn't good.
Glad I saw it in the 3D IMAX, and I may go see it there again, but I can not think of a situation where I may watch this outside of that setting.
The worst part, is who undertakes a multi-trillion dollar mining operation in another galaxy and then leaves it in the hands of a complete sociopath? Worse, that guy seemed to have completed control. There is no board, government, council, confidant, anything that is helping to filter his control? What?
The human side of the operation was so cartoonish and ridiculous. If this were Lord of the Rings, I'd understand. A giant fireball of an eye makes those types of decisions. But when you cast real people as the bad guys, they need to be rooted in some reality.
Plus, kind of like the first Transformers, it is just kind of difficult to watch American soldiers slaughtered en masse when we there are two wars going on. That just isn't entertaining.
Too bad such a gorgeous movie was wasted like this. It really was fun visually, though.

Come the fuck on.Honestly, this is how I fell. I don't understand why so many people are claiming this is the greatest movie ever. It's a cliche plot with some really good visuals slapped onto it. Did anyone else think that it started to resemble a Michael Bay movie in the fight scenes? Tons of explosions and giant robots.... hmmm.

There wasn't near enough explosions for it to be a Michael Bay film. And the cast could actually act.

It wasn't nearly as bad as a Michael Bay fight scene, the camera wasn't shaky enough.

I didn't even like the movie, but I can disagree with that. The movie is a technical marvel, and that includes staging, the framing of shots, camera movement etc.
It was Michael Bay-esque in how lazy and pandering the story was, and how poorly edited the film was, though. (Spot on, Emma!)
