finally got through Desaparecidos - Payola last night and I am really into it. Might be my favorite thing Conor has done in years.
there are a few caveats I have. some of the lyrics are a little clumsy and sound very much like an angsty teen getting into politics wrote them, but on the flip side, I also really like the directness of most of the songs. you can also tell that it was written over a few years since some of the topics are a little old news (MarriKKKopa and Slacktivist, in particular), but overall, that doesn't really hurt the album.
the melodies are reallllly great on the album and I found myself humming the chorus of Golden Parachutes while running errands last night. it also seems a bit more focused than the first album. definitely a release I wasn't really expecting much from this year and I have a feeling it's only going to grow on me.

Anonymous is an awful song however the rest of that album is pretty fucking great.

i actually don't have any qualms with that song. not exactly sure why they chose that topic, but the song itself is really interesting, music-wise. my only worry is if anon co-opted the song, but lol.... i can't imagine most of them being into this album at all considering it's pretty leftist and very vocal about that fact.
after giving it a few listens, i honestly can't pick out a song on this that I dislike. I still have some qualms about some lyrics, but damn, this album is a complete package.

new Refused came out today.... gave it a once over and I liked it, but I'm gonna have to give it another listen or two to get a better feel. something seemed like it was missing, but i also kept getting interrupted and that didn't really help.
The Internet - Ego Death also came out today, just checking it out right now. realllllly into the second song with the Janelle Monae feature.

Holy shit, new Sorority Noise is really good. Reading a bit about what Cam's said about depression/etc in the lead up to the album puts a lot of it into context. It's a huge departure from Forgettable, which was mostly poppier/rocking songs but as an album is a lot better as a whole. Art School Wannabe has been on repeat.

Yeahhhhh, I listened to it right after that. didn't have high hopes to begin with, but man, what an unnecessary album.
gave the new Sorority Noise a listen and I'm super into it. it definitely is a lot different than Forgettable. I get a huge Weezer-ish vibe on quite a few songs, especially Nolsey. Art School Wannabe, Using and Mononokay are probably my favorites so far.

Bought the new Citizen album today and I like it a lot. Feel like it's a little too similar to a lot of new bands doing the mellow rock thing but I'm into it.
EDIT: Oh, and I need to get that Mutoid Man album ASAP. It's Ben Koller & the singer of Cave In doing a stoner rock album and the track I heard was ridiculously catchy.

I've always wondered if Mutoid Man got their name from Smash TV

that Mutoid Man album is pretty solid.
i've been obsessing over Can't Feel My Face lately, can't fuckin wait for The Weeknd's new album. this song is just so smooth.

So, Wilco just dropped a new album out of fucking nowhere. just giving it a listen now.
edit; so, this thing is short, but FUCK, this is good. Cold Slope is fucking AWESOME. You Satellite, Random Name Generator and King of You (so short, but that riff!) are also really fucking cool. This is the best surprise.

A couple months late to the party, but the new mewithoutYou record is awesome. I should really listen to this band more.

i dug the mwY record, i just love A->B Life way too much and will always judge their albums by that haha. totally unfair to them.
Open Mike Eagle - A Special Episode EP might be the best EP I've heard this year, rap or otherwise. Trickeration and Ziggy Starfish (Anti-Anxiety Raps) are absolutely stellar tracks. Ziggy Starfish's beat is so fucking good and the way he rides that beat gives me chills.
edit: also, dude uses a Legend of Zelda sample on Split Pants in Detroit (Or Hyrule), which works really well.

I already listened a bit, but I'm revisiting Future - DS2. Really dark, grimy beats on this, but I'm really digging it. I Serve the Base is prolly the best track. That beat is nasty as fuck, but the whole thing sounds like they were chugging codeine while making this song.

Definitely not on the punk end of things and I know it's been an indie darling, but holy shit is Father John Misty's "I Love You, Honeybear" good. It's been on constant rotation since it came out, and I've seen him twice this year and he's killed it both times.

shit, i feel like there's just soooo much stuff this year, I haven't felt this spoiled with music in a long time. just some random thoughts.
- New Lamb of God record was tremendous. need to listen to it a little more to get a better opinion, but the song with Chino and Erase This are so good.
- new Mac Demarco is really solid, nice little summer record. I've Been Waiting For Her might be one of my favorite Mac songs right now.
- Help by The Front Bottoms has me super stoked for their next album.
- Surprisingly, I really dig the Sublime With Rome record. Sirens and House Party are pretty stellar songs.
- Lil Dicky - Professional Rapper is both a great rap record and really fucking hilarious. Pillow Talking is one of the funniest things I've heard in ages. I think the dude could end up being divisive due to some of his songs, but he's got the skill and he's got the wit.
- City and Colour just had a new song come out, very pleasantly surprised with it. gonna be on the lookout for an album or something soon.
- Jr. Jr. (formerly Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.) had a pretty interesting song just come out, interested in checking out their new album,
- Jim Adkins from Jimmy Eat World has just released a few solo songs and I adore them, but I'm so biased because i really love his voice. Excited to hear his Girls Just Wanna Have Fun cover that's releasing this week.

The new BTBAM is..interesting. Definitely new territory for them but I'm enjoying it more than I thought. Wasn't big on their last couple of records and I miss their heavier side but I like this new sound they're going for. Can see myself going back to this often.
New Cattle Decap record shreds, too.

Excited to hear his Girls Just Wanna Have Fun cover that's releasing this week. This cover is excellent, btw. this week was kind of boring for new releases, but the new Wavves song is pretty good. also checked out the new The Good Life record and thought it was pretty decent, definitely gonna give that more listens. ily Tim Kasher. edit: Spotify failed to inform me that there was a new 2 Chainz mixtape released yesterday. hype is restored.

I never really got too much into Turnover, but i just checked out their album Peripheral Vision from this year and it is a really good album. very shoegaze-y indie rock, honestly, if you have been into like... the last Title Fight, Citizen or Anne records, it's probably right down your alley.

new Ghost album is out today! already gave it a spin and it's just as good as I was hoping. i think the singles are actually the strongest tracks, but Mummy Dust is really awesome.
also... apparently Frank Carter has a new band called Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes and the album dropped last week. Giving it a listen right now, two songs in and I already like this wayyyyyyy more than Pure Love. Glad to see him get back to some more aggressive music.
edit: just finished the Rattlesnakes album, FUCKING AWESOME. It's pretty agressive, but it doesn't really sound like anything he did with Gallows. so much for "I'm so sick of singing about hate" (i mean, this line on I Hate You: "you are nothing, you are nothing to me/you're a useless fucking cunt, you are nothing to me"), but welcome back, Frank.

Bought the Ghost record on iTunes yesterday but haven't listened to it yet. Extinction AD's debut record also came out today and I can see it becoming one of my favorites of the year. It's essentially a new This Is Hell album since it's the same members minus Travis and they were going in a thrashier direction later in their career. I dig it a lot, though.

Yeah, musically very garage-y but vocals are very Danzig karaoke. It's a cool mix. Love the energy of the album all-in-all. Sounds like they'd be a blast live.
