Why is all of this Batman knowledge from all of you not benefiting my dear Comics thread?
I didn't tip on this until someone said Black Mask (who is currently Jeremiah Arkham), but the use of Croc in this one and having Scarecrow in the second makes me think it could be a combination of all those early 90s Arkham Asylum-based stories. Croc is of course known for eating Aaron Cash's hand in Arkham: Living Hell, and The Last Arkham was an awesome story where Batman commits himself to Arkham to get evidence against Zsasz to prove he killed some people. And then Morrison and McKean's Arkham Asylum is a great psychological examination of Batman, so Nolan's got a lot of great material to draw from there if that's where he's going.
I said somewhere else that the last two movies used Batman's best two big dramatic foil villains, but I totally forgot about his big dramatic foil place, Arkham Asylum, which he only keeps out of by being on the "good" side of crazy.

Seeing him in Arkham Asylum would be seriously awesome.
I'm on team hoping for Bane.

When I found out there was going to be a third one, I immediately went to hoping that the third "villain" would be Batman's own sanity, and he'd be tackling Arkham Asylum.

Seeing him in Arkham Asylum would be seriously awesome. Seeing Nolan's take on Arkham Asylum would make me excited beyong words.

Did we all forget that Nolan's take on Arkham was already in the first one? I'm sorry to say, but it didn't seem to interest him very much. I also feel like Nolan is probably acutely aware of the success of the recent Batman videogame(s), and probably doesn't want to get caught up in the success of that medium to let it influence him.
My guess as to how this movie plays out. We'll see how close I am:
Catwoman and Bane are hired separately with the end goal of terminating the Bat. Catwoman, with her skills of subterfuge, is given the task of hunting down and discovering the identity of Batman. She inadvertently falls for Bruce, but not before giving key information about Batman to her employers (whoever that may be) and they in turn sick Bane on Bats, who's purpose is to destroy Batman in as public and gruesome a way as possible, to maximize the effect of taking out Batman. During all of this, Batman is trying his best to lay low while the heat of Dent's death blows over, but Bane's activity forces him into a corner, leading to an interesting conclusion with Batman/Catwoman Vs. Everyone else.
Why I think this is plausible: Granted, this is all completely out of my head, but it seems a semi-logical progression with Nolan. Both of these villains are heavily grounded in reality and can easily be put on the big screen without alienating audiences by being bizarre or comical. Having Catwoman introduced brings a new love interest to Bruce, but adds an element of predation and danger that Bruce hasn't had to deal with before. He's been, to this point, a very damsel in distress sort of guy. Bane fulfills a similar need to the story. Nolan's Batman has plenty of experience out-thinking and out-maneuvering his opponents, but he's yet to face anyone who's both smart and capable of breaking him the fuck in half. We've yet to see Nolan's Batman fight someone who could really mix it up with him. I think Hardy would make a fine Bane if that's what he's been cast for. See Bronson.
Why it wouldn't work: The Catwoman angle is very close to Batman Returns. Audiences still remember and shudder at the thought of Batman and Robin's Bane. Nolan may be tired of using organized crime/the mob as vehicles for his stories.

Also, I agree the title is a bit 'meh,' but keep in mind they probably wanted to call it The Dark Knight Returns, but got nixed because Burton already used that tag for one of his Bat-flicks.

I'm pretty surprised. Don't know how I feel about this. I was pretty put-off by Ledger until a trailer though. It's going to be interesting seeing how Nolan weaves this story. Anne Hathaway is still blowing my mind. I wonder if Nolan plans on having Selina Kyle's prostitute background in this story. I can't imagine Anne Hathaway playing a prostitute. I can picture her being seductive as Catwoman though. Also wonder if Nolan will give people what they want between Bane and Batman.

I dislike Anne Hathaway so much, but I won't let it crush my excitement for this movie. I've never read any of the Batman comics so I don't know who Bane is, but he's got a sweet name and I hope he's awesome.

Ha, I didn't even catch that. Well played, Katie.
Personally, I was more surprised by Bane than Anne Hathaway.

Haha, I'm glad to hear this because I like Tom Hardy. A lot...
I've never really liked the Catwoman character very much but I'll be interested to see if this next film is able to do something new, rather than relying on the tired "dangerous seductress with a past" trope tooooo much. I'm not psyched about Anne Hathaway, but I'm not going to anticipate a Katie Holmes style snooze-fest with her either.

Catwoman is awesome in her "on Batman's side when she feels like it" capacity.

Catwoman is awesome in her "on Batman's side when she feels like it" capacity. Yeah, her sense of self preservation and uh...mutable allegiances is actually kind of cool, I just get sick of the whole "seductress" archetype. It seems hard for most storytellers to get beyond the blantantly obvious features of this type of character, and personally it's one that I've never really been able to identify with. Hopefully they'll be able to expand on that a bit more this time around; I have faith in Nolan, especially after watching the female characters in Inception.

I'm a fan of catwoman, less so of Anne Hathaway. But I'll reserve judgement. I'm interested to see how they tackle her character. As everyone else said, hopefully they don't just go for the dangerous seductress thing and lose the heart and soul.
Stoked for Bane. I trust Nolan not to dick either of these characters up.
Though, frankly, it's not like he could do anything worse to them than previous films have. So that's... mildly comforting.

I did some research on Bane (I'm not too familiar with Batman lore outside the movies and Arkham Asylum) and the more I read, the more I think this was an excellent choice. I'm really excited.
