New year. New thread. New bold predictions:
Flyers won't make it into the playoffs at all. Blackhawks will get in around 5th ot 6th place and be knocked out before they can gain much steam. Tyler Myers will have a sophomore slump with the Sabres.

Nucks are coming out of the west this season, we just have to get Raymond signed, and let a few rookies have a shot, which will be easy now that Demitra announced he's going to the KHL. That frees up a solid 4 milllion right there.
Weber was made captain of the Preds, which makes us all happy back home, and they'll sign Franson to a long term deal this summer and that also rules.
Chicago will never repeat, the cap era says so.

My Ducks lose Niedermayer to retirement, but pick up Lydman; that coupled with Visnovsky might mean our defense is okay, but I'll hold my breath until I see them in action. (Also, I have no idea who our starters are now... Wisniekski? Oh, wait, he's a free agent, too...) Koivu is back, but Selanne might be on his way out, even though the Ducks are slowly becoming "Team Finland." And my favorite team player, Bobby Ryan, might jump ship to another team. All that said, if Perry and Getzlaf remain our "go-to" guys, we're doomed; they may play great at times, but they're both a pair of babies. Still need to wait for a more solidified roster to emerge.
This year's finals will be Caps vs. Sharks. Both teams finally get over their play-off woes in 2011.

Caps will not make the finals unless Boudreau changes the system up. Firewagon hockey does not win in the playoffs and that's been proven the last few years. We still need a second-line center but I guess we'll be calling up Perrault or Johanasson to fill that role, which I'm fine with. We've got about $8 million in cap space to play with (assuming we let Fleischmann walk) and there's some free agents out there that we can pick up so hopefully we can acquire a stay-at-home D-man and not overpay him to some huge contract like everyone else is doing.

rc, didn't you predict Sharks vs. Caps in the first thread? Never gonna happen, both of those teams are overstocked in cheifs and not enough indians.
I can't even venture a guess as to who will come out of the east this season, it's such a crap shoot over there. No one saw Philly or Montreal going far, but there they were. The west will be either the Canucks or the Hawks, with the Preds making some noise if they can get away with playing a weak team in the first round.
Calgary will not make the playoffs.

Red Wings will hang around, too if Howard can avoid a sophomore slump. He's older than most rookies so I think he'll be fine considering that and the team in front of him. Kings could really make a push in the playoffs if they get someone else up front.
The thing with the East is that teams 5-14 all have their fair shot at making the playoffs because of how bad those teams are during the regular season. Anyone can make it and go all the way if they show up in the playoffs. Flyers got in on a goddamn shootout and look what happened.

Yeah, the Wings are always around, but they have a lot of older guys now, and Howard is a concern. I didn't think of the Kings... they will be good, shit. Unless they sign Kovi, then the team dynamic will be shot to shit.

I think this is Lidstrom's last year but he's still great even at that age. Detroit really needs to dump guys like Draper and Cleary so their younger players can get more ice time. I think Abdelkader and Helm played more post-season games than regular season games going into last year. They could be screwed if they run into injury problems again.

Kovalchuk re-signs with the Devils for 17 YEARS at $100 mil...apparently it's only a $5.9 mil cap hit. I call bullshit... Can the NHL veto a 17 year contract?

Oh whaaaaat? I heard seven years, 60 mil. Sweet mother of fuck that's a joke of a contract. Say goodbye to the real future of NJ, that of course being Parise.
Edit- yep, you're right, except it's supposedly 150 mil.

Dude's like 27 and he's signing for nearly two-decades? Like, really really? How do you come to terms like that?
"Geez, you want a seven year contract? Why not make it seventeen years, lol, amirite?"
"ACTUALLY..."

This WILL be the most fucked up contract ever signed, this is way worse than Yashin or DiPietro. I would be scared to sign Crosby to that at age 22.
Okay now it's back to a 100 mil. c'mon TSN.

I'm hearing like 5 different things but it's looking like it'll be over $100 mil at 15+ which is still ridiculous. It's a low cap hit but why the hell would NJ want to tie that much up in Kovalchuk when they've already made moves that didn't leave them with a lot of cap room as it is. Elias and Parise are good as gone. Kovalchuk fits into their system well since they have enough defensive forwards but signing ANY player for that long is just stupid.
Also hear Simon Gagne was traded to the Lightning. Basically a salary dump for the Flyers. Gagne is a Caps killer so I'm not thrilled that he's in our division now. On the other hand, I like that the SE is getting tougher so we'll have some actual competition this year.

Yeah, it was a salary dump but I don't blame Philly for choosing to dump him and not Carter. Gagne is 30 and is injured all the time. The Lightning could make some noise down there, Stamkos, Vinnie, Gagne? That's a pretty sick line. If that even happens, who knows, Stevie Y is all business though, I love it. There's a rumor the Leafs are trying to Kaberle down there for Malone and a pick too.

Even if it's a salary dump, they got a pretty piss poor return for Gagne. I wasn't expecting him to go for that much but I think Philly could have gotten more than Matt Walker and a pick from TB. Lightning need some help on defense getting Kaberle would make sense for them. They're the closest thing to a division rival we have right now. There's been lots of bad blood in our last few games against them.

Sooo, why was there ever a lock-out? This stupid 17 year deal makes the entire NHL bush league. His final five years will be at 500,000 a season and they know they will just buy him out by the time he's in his 40's. So the CBA has one huge loophole: stretch out the cap hits, front load it and let him coast into his twilight years. These contracts need to go away, and fast. How are you supposed to land any big names now? You have to draft them and lock them up for their entire career? That's fucking boring. I want guys to leave teams on bad terms and see rivalries grow, you know, that kinda shit.

Oh shit! They just pulled the plug on that ridiculous contract. I was going crazy trying to find the article I was posting in on TSN.ca and now it seems it's been rejected due to "Salary cap circumvention." Did the NHL just grow balls?

Was just about to post that. And they were just talking about that on another board I post on. Chicago did the same thing with that retarded Hossa contract. NHL's CBA expires after next year, apparently so they better do something that will prevent these kinds of contracts from happening. I don't blame the teams for exploiting it, but it doesn't make it any less ridiculous. Guess the NHL finally drew the line.

Bump because it's Christmas morning.
Lots of good games tonight. Leafs-Habs, Pens-Flyers, Avs-Hawks. I am so fucking glad the season's back. This is the best time of the year.

I'm pretty excited for this season. I was almost completely out of it all of last season. I'm still not sure who is on the Ducks this year. I need to start checking this shit out.

Turco is going to give the Hawks fans a lot of headaches this year. Game winner bounced right off his glove, hahahaha. Hell of a shot by Stastny, though.

Stupid Flyers and their new goalie. Stupid Penguins not playing as hard as they should've. I think they forgot what checking is.
Also, this commercial from 1996 recently came back into my life, and I feel that everyone should share in it.

I can not watch tonight's game because my school doesn't get CSN even though it's a regular cable channel. Doing my best to follow via NHL on the Fly. Why we get the NHL Network and not CSN is beyond me. Game started with Pavelec collapsing at one end. Hope he's okay. I really hate to see that.
