Opening was pretty boring, but I enjoyed watching all the nations march in. And Gretzky lit the torch. Hell yeah.
And apparently I'm a commie because I don't know who I want to root for in hockey. I was going by players I like, not country! Damn it.

Didn't watch the opening, but I'm watching ski jumping right now. I dig it!
Does anybody know when curling is going to happen? I just looked through NBCs entire schedule and I couldn't find it. I'm failing at navigating the site, methinks.

I'll probably watch some of the snowboarding, because I have a guilty pleasure crush on Shaun White.

I really wish I had cable to watch this, curling and figure skating are my faves. I think it was women's speed skiing or something I watched last night? They did a segment on how "wonderful and beautiful" the female athlete's bodies are. I had to check my calendar to make sure it was still 2010.

DUDE SPEEDSKATING IS SO AWESOME.
I feel SO bad for the two Korean guys that fell on the last lap. I mean, it's awesome that it meant that Korea didn't get the sweep and we got second and third, but man. LAST lap.

Neal:
"The Canadian women's hockey team set an Olympic record on Saturday night, welcoming Slovakia to its first Winter Games tournament with an 18-0 demolition at Hockey Place. Before you shed a tear for the Slovaks, keep in mind they're the national that defeated Bulgaria by the score of 82-0 in an infamous game in 2008."

How the holy fuck do you earn 82 points in hockey?!

Apparently back in 1924, the Canadian team beat some team 122-3.
EDIT: I read that wrong. It was a total combined score of all games Canada played.

Which is still fuckin' impressive.

Indeed. But in my head, it was all in one game, which is even more impressive, haha.

That's pretty much a goal every thirty seconds. Haha. Not even team Iceland in The Mighty Ducks 2 was that good.

Referring back to the 82-0 game... what's the point of having a goal tender?

Post by twhneal on Feb 14, 2010 1:45:57 GMT -5
I have to wonder if they got like 400 shots on goal, and the goalie was actually doing pretty well.

In that case... what's the point in having defense? Haha.

WOOO FIGURE SKATING! I'm not going to lie, I get a sick pleasure out of some of the people falling while doing jumps.
I like the older Chinese pair. Hope they take it. awww. They said one of the russian pairs had a 'temultuous relationship' and had to go to a therapist for it. They then both busted their asses on their couple-jump. lulz.
and I searched a lot for it on youtube but it's not there...on Roseanne when Scott Hamilton went on and sock-skated with mark in the kitchen. I really want to do that now. How funny that I've never even ice-skated!

Not gonna lie, I totally am planning on watching all of the figure skating competitions. I am really excited for the women's competition.

Last night I watched.. doubles? pairs? I know nothing about figure skating. Whatever you call it. I saw the Chinese couple get first before they switched back to luge (Germany got gold and silver! Way to be, motherland) and since they did that feature on them and told their story I, of course, got sucked in and now want them to win. They're favorites for gold anyway, I think? Or did they officially win?
I wish I didn't have to miss a single second of the olympics but I always miss a ton and never know what's going on.

It's not over yet. I think it's tonight that they have the 'long program' which is the 'freestyle' skating. The other one had certain elements necessary packed into a short time period but tonight is a bit different. So that score will be combined with yesterday's to decide the medals.
Makes sense?

Yep. Katie, last night you caught the short program for the pairs competition. There is still their long program, plus you have men's short and long as well as women's short and long.

Tonight was terrible for so many of the skating pairs! Almost all had falls or huge fuckups. Glad the older Chinese people won though. awww.
I lamented to my mother about always wanting to be a skater. She's like "Why didnt you tell me this years ago?" I mean, we had no rink in our town until I was in high school but still. haha. I still have dreams. Maybe I will start in Maine.

So many of these sports and events... How the fuck do you find yourself doing these things??
Luge, for example. Are there 8-year-old kids being pushed into ice luging by their parents, who have hopes of winter olympic gold? Are there amateur luging leagues that I'm just not aware of? It's not like skiing or hockey, where you can kind of find your footing in the sport at a young age. Who the hell decides one day that they're going to strap on some ten-foot skis and jump the length of a football field?
