It's not really that upsetting otherwise? Nymphomaniac is way rougher and it's not even violent, just soul crushing.

It's not really that upsetting otherwise? You mean Anticrhist? I dunno, the testicle crushing was pretty bad. I just have a real thing about von Trier. I won't even get into it. His films make me feel horrible and anxious, and while that might be the point...I don't need that shit. I find him gratuitous and basically pointless.

Oh and Avon I wish the lady next to me would have thought about that, I was next to what must have been a two year old kid and he didn't shut up for the first like 1/3 of the movie. He fell asleep for the last 2/3 though so at least there's that. This was pretty much our experience seeing Avengers last night, except it was two kids (ages probably 6-7 and maybe 4). The littlest one talked through the whole thing, including a whole one-sided conversation about why there was no Batman in this movie and where is Batman, and there should be Batman, and is this guy actually Batman, etc., which while amusing was also suuuuper annoying. He also got really bored through the non-action parts and at one point was doing a little stomp/pretend tap dance to entertain himself. But the worst was when he needed to go to the bathroom and the dad made the older boy take him so that he didn't miss any of the movie. When they passed by at the end of the movie, I told the guy that he was a horrible person, but I don't think he heard me. But seriously. Dude was a shitty dad. We did enjoy the movie, but in more of a "it's nice to check in with friends we like and see what they're up to" way rather than a "this was an excellent movie!" way.

oh my god I wanna watch Avengers with that kid. When I saw it there were kids crying when Ultron was onscreen. Good family time.

I was kinda let down, the reviews built it up too much.
The pacing was really off; it took longer than I expected to get started, and it never really ramped up to the intensity I was expecting. There was a lot of action, but I didn't really feel like it was escalating. There were maybe two or three points where it felt like shit was about to get real, and each time they backed off. I didn't even realize the "climactic" fight at the end was going to be the big fight until it was over. Also, Max was easily the least important/interesting character and there was no excuse for the flashback/ghost stuff, totally lame. I don't think Tom Hardy was a good choice for Max; I know the script didn't help, but he just didn't seem to have any presence.
It did a lot of things right: it looked gorgeous, the music was great, there wasn't any of the shaking cameras or super fast cuts, the stunts were well done with minimal CGI, and the world building was fantastic. It just didn't come together as well as it could have. It was a solid modernization of an old campy franchise (and fits well with the rest of the movies, though Road Warrior is better), but I feel like it wasted a lot of its potential. It was about on par with Rambo 4, when it could have been a post apocalyptic epic.

Isn't the beauty of Mad Max that it's super economical and doesn't bother with (hold on, I can feel the puke rising in my throat) "world building?"

The Desolation of Smaug is on HBO Go, so I'm doing that. It's a fucking weird shame that such a short book was spit into three 2+ hour movies, and the CGI is god damn tragic, but Martin Freeman is just THE BEST. That casting was so good that I can sort of forgive the whole thing.
Edit: Nvm, barrel scene. So so awful.

I rented Gone Girl yesterday before I got the news about my friend (who disappeared) and I was too drunk and fucked up emotionally to watch it, but I finished it tonight. Pretty good. Mostly I just don't like feeling sorry for Ben Affleck.

Frailty: Awesome. Bill Paxton starred and directed this and he is the man.
Blade Runner: Hadn't seen this since I was a teenager, it is one of the best movies ever made.

Went and saw Mad Max. I wanted to love it but action just is not my genre. Still liked it, just don't need to see it again.
