What's the deal? Do shows just sometimes skip a week, or a couple of weeks? Is this highly publicised or does one turn on the telly for one's favourite show only to discover that it's not on or that there's a repeat? What is the reason for this?
Thank you.

What show was it? A lot of the main channels delay new episodes of shows for sports playoff games, which I think is the case at the moment.

Glee has fucked off for three weeks I think. Psych appears to just come on at random. Saturday Night Live has no regular scheduling it seems.

Emma, there is no reason other then American tv people are idiots. They screw around with our favorite shows and move popular ones to other nights to make way for newer ones. We have lots of repeats during the season depending on the station and show. You guys don't do that do you? You have a full non-repeat season right?

This seems like an incredibly foolhardy way to go about things, along with there being no shows between May and September. What do you watch in summer? Just nothing at all? Of course we do not do that here. Although our series last six or eight episodes; if they were 22 I agree there would probably be some trouble.

We have rotating seasons. There are fall lineups, which air during the fall and winter, then another lineup that runs through the spring and summer. Now, beyond that you have the differences between Network TV and Cable TV. Network TV typically runs a season straight through, with the occasional break for various reasons, such as sporting events. On top of that you have "Sweeps" ( www.slate.com/id/2095577/ ). Networks will hold new episodes until the start of Sweeps as a way to help boost the ratings. Now cable networks have their own seasonal structure that they often use, especially USA network. They typically air X number of episodes in a half season block, then take a several month break and come back with the final half. That varies from network to network. There are always new shows going on, though.

Yeah, week skipping is common. Could be other programs sweeping it aside, could be them trying to make time to catch up with filming because they got behind schedule, could be the station just fucking with scheduling, could be just an 'anticipation' factor. I know a lot of shows missed last week so they could air their 'Halloween' episode this week.

Yeah. There are just too many possible reasons.
The other thing to consider is the simple fact that television networks and studios in America are ultimately stupid because they can get away with it. The model is kind of ridiculous and we just play along with the absurdity.

I wonder how many tv shows have been canceled because of this bizarre scheduling policy. I'm being haunted by memories of Arrested Development.

That's pretty much what killed Futurama. Fox moved it around so much that no one ever knew when it was on.

Glee has fucked off for three weeks I think. When I watched the last episode, at the end it gave a preview of the next one and said it would be back in November (if I'm remember right). I hate when that happens, but it does a lot. Thanks, sports.

I hate it when a commercial for a new episode comes on and it says "new in 2 weeks!" for what fucking reason!? ugh.
Dont forget holidays/major events will change things. Like Superbowl Sunday...a lot of programs on other networks will show only reruns because they know most people are watching the Superbowl and nothing else. Vh1 always does that shit for any sort of large event that may take away from their viewers. GRRRRRRRRRR.

the stupidity of tv execs amazes me. Like, it only takes a second's thought to realise that unstable scheduling is going to hurt viewing figures, but they do it anyway. Nuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrr.

I fear this will be the fate of Ugly Betty now that they moved it to Friday nights for that Flash Forward show. I'm sorry new shows, find your own time slot. I love Ugly Betty!

Is stuff like this the reason Two and Half Men is the biggest show on tv and Friday Night Lights is on Direct tv? I don't know what Direct tv is but it sure sounds like shit.

Hmm? DirecTV is just a satellite television provider.

Our television stations are all funded by advertising and not a license fee like how the BBC is funded (I apologize if my assumption is wrong and you aren't British), so TV stations here constantly switch things around regarding what draws the most viewers (or people to watch the ads). It all comes back to the damnable capitalism!

Hmm, that makes sense. But we have channels here that are funded by advertising and it doesn't seem to be a problem.

I don't know what Direct tv is but it sure sounds like shit. directv, charter, comcast are all cable or satellite providers. nbc, cbs, abc, etc. are all channels that show the programs. the providers usually have a list of channels from which the customers can choose, from the very basic (like the nbcs and abcs) to the narrow-casted and rare channels (fox soccer channel, oxygen network) i have no idea why two and a half men is/was? the biggest show on tv, that still baffles me, but a lot of americans like csi for whatever reason too, so basically americans love bullshit.

lets not forget that because of csi's success, there's a shitton of awful criminal/murder dramas on tv, each one more hair-splittingly different and embarrassingly stylized than the next.
cold case, the forgotten, criminal minds, csi miami, csi new york, ncis, ncis los angeles, law and order criminal intent, numb3rs, etc, etc, etc

Hmm, so what's the deal with Friday Night Lights then? It didn't get high enough ratings for NBC so they moved it so now they're still producing it and showing re-runs but new episodes are shown on Directv. But is Directv not a channel?! Where is it being shown?!
