Articles of Faith (from Chicago, '81-'85) was one of the greatest bands to ever come out of the American hardcore scene and the fact that they weren't one of the most popular bands of that era is a fucking shame. Like Husker Du, one of the first and only bands to integrate post-punk influence into the hardcore sound, in their own unique style. Aggressive, angry, painfully heartfelt vocals, smart and sincere lyrics, great guitar work. Forgotten pioneers who laid the groundwork for emo in their breakout from the "hardcore format," while retaining the genre's fury and multiplying its emotional rawness and sincerity. Initial proprietor of "personal is political." Their sound evolved markedly throughout the course of their career: their first two 7"s, Wait and What We Want Is Free, are above-average early hardcore, while their final LP In This Life is a melodic and creative foreshadower of the "emo" sound (excellent record, too). But it's their 1984 LP Give Thanks that, to me, is the perfect marriage of the two: plenty of creative instrumentation and balance between fast and slow, plenty of hooks and melodies and bare-it-all lyrics, but still an angry, scathing and undeniably hardcore record. Both LP's were produced by Bob Mould (which in itself speaks volumes). God, this band was so fucking good. I recommend starting with Give Thanks and then moving forward or backward from there. It's quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite records. I was thinking about this band last night and how it was dumb of me not to have any. Awesome that you could rectify that! This band rules ass.
