What is the best Television show of all time? I say we undergo a completely unscientific experiment to find out what that show is. The only way we can do this is by building a nice little poll. So, here is what we're going to do (and what I need from you).
For the next week, I need your suggestions. I'd like for people to post their favorite show in this thread and next Wednesday, I will compile them and start the first of several polls to determine which show will be the last one standing.
If possible, I'd like for everyone to stick to 1 show, but as long as you keep it at 3 and under, I won't whine too much. A week should give everyone time to get their thoughts in.
Once the voting starts, we'll figure out how long each poll stays up and how many shows get eliminated each week.
If no one is interested, the thread will disappear as if it never happened. I think it would be a nice, fun, community activity though.
Go!

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and the Daily Show (if that counts) I will refrain from suggesting Lost, because it will lose

Roseanne is probably the one show I will watch no matter what is on any other channel.

The Wire, hands down.
The only real contender is the Simpsons, which may over take it due to longevity and how absolutely genius it was from seasons 6-10. Obviously it also loses points because of its longevity...after season 11 its good television, but not even in the discussion of BEST SHIT EVER, you know?

Until a few months ago, I hadn't seen a new episode of the Simpsons since October of 2001, and it really was pretty good. I don't get the hate for the new seasons, but maybe that's because I haven't been keeping up/noticing how repetitive it must be? Anyway, Simpsons is clearly the only answer for this.

Like I said, good television, probably better than a lot of what else is out there, it just isn't up there with these "best shows ever"

Season 4 will seal it, guaranteed. It's everything that is great about the show x50000000.

The only tv show I love that isn't a cartoon is Scrubs, and Scrubs has a severe drop off after season 4 ends.

Mystery Science Theater 3000, no question.
Reasons:
- Never jumped the shark or got weaker over time - All new additions to the cast were amazing - Always fun to quote - Very inventive and unique format - Nummy Muffin Coocool Butter! and from one of my favorite episodes:

I should also add this to the above post, and I might, but:
- There are no restrictions. I don't care if it's animated, live action, news, comedy, drama, 30 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour, 1 season, 9 seasons, black and white, color, sketch, whatever.
- By all means, explain your choices, both here and in the voting threads. Tell people why you love a show or why you're voting a show off when the time comes. EXPLAIN THYSELF, DAMN THEE! However, don't be (too much of) a dick. We can all disagree like people who have flashes of maturity between fart jokes. Your opinion is not a fact and the only reason I'm doing this is because we're a fairly diverse group of people. "Greatest" is a term that has any number of meanings to any number of people. What's great to you may not be great to someone else, etc, etc. Respect that and we'll all have fun.

Totally forgot about this. What a goddamn great show. Still the only show I've ever seen on TV that has made me uncomfortable to be home alone at night. But kind of falls into "if only they hadn't made the last few seasons!" category.

I agree with The X-Files, but I also agree with Justin's point about the last few seasons. Still, the first six are the some of the best television ever. No duo ever has matched Mulder and Scully's chemistry, and I don't think anyone ever will.
Anyways, my vote is definitely The Simpsons. And if 30 Rock keeps up the level of quality for a couple more seasons, it could be a serious contender.

its the wire because the wire DESTROYED every cop drama ever (except maybe original l&w) and no tv show has revolutionized a format so brilliantly before or after.
plus, marlo, bubbles, mcnutty, kima, daniels, omar--OMAR, dukie, randy, michael, d'angelo, avon, rawls (who was gay???), bodie, chris paltrow, snoop, stringer bell, prop joe, cheese, wee-bay, lester, clay davis, mayor royce, carcetti, goddamn so many great characters

Sorry, but even if it's great (I don't know, I've never seen it) 13 episodes isn't nearly enough to cement a show as the best ever.

When is/was The Wire on? I've never even heard of it.
I'm going to say Roseanne too. Not MY favorite, but I think it covers a lot of bases.

it was on hbo from i think 2003-08. had five seasons.
it was about the baltimore drug scene, from the dealers, to the runners, to the narcotics and homicide divisions of the baltimore police and their attempts to work through bureaucratic red tape and quotas to get real arrests and make a difference. the wire is the wiretap they had to get on phones that was so crucial to catching the criminals. season 2 expanded to the means through which the drugs are delivered into the city, season 3 was about city officials (specifically a mayoral race) and their attempts to better the city, season 4 was about kids in school and how they get involved into the drug ring and season 5 was about everything, plus a newspaper, plus the city working on a tight budget. every character was based on a real person (or sometimes an amalgam of a few people). omar is gay btw, he's a mean dude with a shotgun and loves to make out with guys!!
