I'm gonna walk you through this, people, and hope a whole bunch of YouTube links is good for it. Note that the stuff he's done over the years is pretty varied, so I'll represent sounds as I can, in chronological order (with the oldest stuff being pretty uhm, cartoonish, I guess). Note that these choices will be biased toward personal favorites but will, nevertheless, cover most sounds.
One of my favorite songs off of Deaf (first album). The approach of this album and of Ache is relatively similar, so I won't bother with anything from Ache. In certain moods, I really love this Foetus--openly playful and silly.
Next album worth mentioning is Hole, but none of the songs I like from it seem to be on YouTube. You can hear the sound getting a little "darker", and the way he sings start to change. "Hot Horse" would be the most obvious example of the vocal change but oh well.
Fun dancy song. Cheesy, I guess? Whatever, it's Foetus. It's kind of his thing.
From Nail, an album that a lot of fans seem to drop as their favorite. I never really liked his 'instrumental' work outside of the Manorexia and Steroid Maximus (the Venture Bros. stuff is basically a beefed-up Steroid Maximus), so the noisy experimental stuff in between tracks here kind of throws me off. A clear show of that voice that people seemed to like for a while. Trivia!: He used to do the voice over for MTV Sports.
Throwing Wiseblood in here, a project between him and Roli Mossiman (notably of Swans). I think this video's really interesting but can be kind of uncomfortable if you don't want to see constant pelvic thrusting and whatnot.
EDIT: I forgot to mention his extraordinary mullet. Hahahhahaha. I think it might be part of the whole "concept" behind Wiseblood, being this ridiculous, hyper-masculine, intentionally trashy thing.
I'm not linking it here, but you can see, later, how this and PTTM had almost certainly heavily influenced later bands (see: Stop Trying To Tie Me).
EDIT: Shit, forgot his collaboration with Marc Almond! It belongs here. I love this; Marc's great singing + JG's awesome, epic instrumentation. Very overdramatic, but that's fun for me.
I really like Thaw, too, though. Kind of a blossom of his dark humor type stuff. Long song, but a landmark really.
That's all I'll cover of the 80s. Be back for the 90s (which is where Steroid Maximus comes in) soon.
