Okay, we've got 13 days left in the year. It's been a damn good one for us gamers. I'm at work, so this won't be as detailed but my nods are between:
Bioshock infinite. Seriously, I shouldn't be surprised after 1's brilliance, but there I was. A shooter with a story that floored me. Characters, albeit only two of them, that are as well crafted as any I can remember for a while. Gameplay that spiced up shooters quite a bit. There is always a lighthouse, always a man and always a city.
GTA5 Ugh, I don't want to put it here, but I have to. The setting of this game was perfect. Not "so good I love it and exaggerate," perfect. The pure joy you get doing ANYTHING in this game is unrivaled. Get high and shoot aliens? Play golf? Go on a hipster killing spree? Covered. All while being immersed in a beautiful environment.
A link between worlds comes behind, as c'mon, Zelda! And last of us was hard to leave out, but is right in there. Argue with me, legion of nerds!

Saints Row IV > GTA 5. GTA 5 likes to handcuff you and force you to do things that aren't fun. Saints Row IV hands you a clown wig and a flamethrower and tells you to go nuts.

I've been catching up on a games backlog and I think Gone Home is the only game I played that was actually released this year. I thought it was great and it's an incredibly significant game in terms of what the games industry can create, so for that reason I think it's deserving of the GOTY title - even if the gameplay itself was limited.
Personally, the best game I played this year has been Borderlands 2. I know it came out last year but I only started it around March.

I need to play more Borderlands because I keep hearing how great it is, but my very limited experience with it was mostly underwhelming.
All I've played extensively from this year is GTA V and I think it's pretty sweet. I've grown more inclined to play video games lately so maybe I'll pick up some new stuff.

Nich, Borderlands 2 is pretty fun. It's pretty fun to try out the different character styles for some replay value, but once you get up higher, it's a lot more grinding and looting to get better stuff.
GTAV is also the only thing I think I got to play this year... Pretty much didn't do any gaming for the first half of the year, but I've sunk a lot of time into GTAV. I agree with Nicksaw in that it does make you do some dumb things, but overall, I think it's amazing. I was hooked the moment I stole a sports car and took off down a sidewalk, running people over to Rihanna's "Only Girl" and then hit something that sent my car cartwheeling into traffic. San Andreas was always my favorite, so I really did like the reimagining of Los Santos.
