so, I FINALLY got to see this, been dying to ever since they announced the tour. holy fuck. if you don't know the premise, basically it's sort of a horror film, loosely based on the Westboro Baptist Church(there's even a brief mention of them in the film) if they were gun nuts and far more extreme in actually carrying out their beliefs rather than simply voicing them. Michael Parks is excellent as Pastor Abin Cooper, he was appropriately terrifying. John Goodman also gives a really great performance. quite a bit of violence and blood and some very shocking moments, but i really think Kevin Smith showed he can pull off more than just comedy with this film. if you wanna watch, there's the legal route: coopersdell.com/ VOD on pretty much every major service, but fair warning, it's like 10 bucks on all of them. or, you could go the not-so-legal route if you know where to look. i'm for sure gonna be putting some cash down to rent it just because the dude deserves it. i think he's gonna be taking it on the road for quite a while too and doing a screening with a Q&A afterwards and it should be hitting theaters later this fall.

The local independent theater is screening this for one-night only, and there's going to be a Q&A with Kevin Smith via webcast. I'm thinking about going, but tickets are 20 bucks and I'm poor as hell.

I liked it, but it certainly wasn't perfect. The first half or so was really excellent, but after that it gets a little shaky. Still, like Dave said, Michael Parks and John Goodman were both great. I feel like giving the ATF that order to kill everyone to cover their own asses was a ham-fisted attempt by Smith to say "look, the government guys are evil too!" It wasn't all that believable, but the whole movie was over-the-top, so that's not really a big knock against it.
When those trumpets sounded, I briefly thought "...Is Smith really doing another movie where God literally makes an appearance?" The explanation was good, though. Haha.
I thought one of its strengths was its length. It moved along at a good clip, so you didn't have a lot of time to dwell on its faults. I also liked how it was genuinely unpredictable, and the last 1/3rd of it was pretty intense. Also, I really wish people would stop billing this as a horror movie, because it's really not, and I think that skews people's expectations.

Oh, I almost forgot: I was amused that there were two people from Breaking Bad in this: Anna Gunn played the one kid's mom, and the dude who plays Badger was that one sheriff's deputy.

Not going to pay for it if I don't have to.

It was definitely better than I expected.
And I totally agree about billing it as a horror movie. I can see calling it a psychological thriller, but just dumping "horror" on it is a bit of a stretch.

yeah, I hesitated in labeling it as a horror movie in my post. P, your description is much more apt. Nick, I definitely agree that the first half is better. I definitely was a fan of it overall, there's only some small quibbles I have with it (cinematography being one, it just felt a little... off).
