I finally decided to get off my ass and get started on this. I downloaded the first season, and I'm already hooked. I think I was afraid to watch it for a while, because it's widely considered the best TV series of all time, and those are almost impossible expectations to live up to, but so far nothing is telling me otherwise. I mean, what can I say? The acting is impeccable, the characters are fascinating, and it's the most unflinchingly honest portrayal of drugs, cops, and poor African-Americans (and the connections between the three) I've ever seen. I can't wait to get further into the series. Oh, and please be liberal with the use of spoiler tags, since I'm just starting out

It's silly, I tried to watch this, and couldn't understand their accents, so I stopped. . . I guess I'll try again eventually.

The best show, absolutely. If you've finished the whole thing and want to see something that's like the nonfiction version of the show, I'd recommend the Sundance series Brick City.

My favorite moment so far is Omar whistling "The Farmer In the Dell" as he strolls down the block with a shotgun, while everyone flees in terror. Holy shit.

I'd say it changed the way I thought about things, it made me start realizing every single thing, economics to local and national politics to history is connected directly to every person individually.

The Corner and Homicide are also great reads. Simon in conversation is a really scary figure, read any interview with him and chances are he tears the interviewer to shreds.

But he's also one of the only DVD commentators worth listening to. Highlights of the Wire DVD's are listening to Simon go through his own show. So good!
But yeah, he's probably a real dickbag in real life. What are you going to do.

I know I kind of fought against it in favor of other shows during that whole "Greatest TV Show of All Time" thing a while back, but The Wire probably is, hands down, the greatest show ever created for television as a medium.

Love love LOVE The Wire. Homicide is indeed an excellent read, and an amazing work of journalism. Seriously. So good. Last time I was in Baltimore we inadvertently took a wrong left at Oriole Park and drove through about 10 miles of Pigtown. It felt like I was in the show. Also on that trip I was hanging out at a bar and one of my friends pointed to the adjacent building and told me that it was the motel that Brother Mouzone was shot at. Man I have been meaning to rewatch the series for a while. I should get on that. Have you guys seen that Rust Belt episode of No Reservations? Tony Bourdain totally chills with Snoop. That girl is hard.

I bought a box set of the entire series off eBay. Turns out its a bootleg, but it's an exact bootleg, video quality and everything's perfect. I got lucky.

BUMP I just finished watching season 4 and it's pretty much the best season of any show ever. I really liked the first and third seasons, and season 2 was fine, but adding the education system into the mix just made everything so much better. the kids are all great and it's so fucking sad all over, except Namond-wise of course and Prez and Bubbles rule and I'm rambling but I needed to express my love somewhere. go watch this show if you haven't already.

Season 3 better than Season 2? You're crazy!
But man, Season 4? So flawless, but borderline un-rewatchable- Dukie's storyline is so brutal. Even in the commentary for the final episode, they admit that the original script called for Dukie to inject but they had to stop at him tying off because just the extra step was too much.
Even the rendition of Way Down in the Hole was the best of all the seasons.
"Tell me something, Jimmy. How exactly do you think it all ends? A parade? A gold watch? A shining Jimmy-McNulty-day moment, when you bring in a case sooooo sweet everybody gets together and says, "Aw, shit! He was right all along. Should've listened to the man." The job will not save you, Jimmy. It won't make you whole, it won't fill your ass up.
---
Ends. They all end. The handcuffs go click and it's over. The next morning, it's just you in your room with yourself.
Hey, hey, hey, a life. A life, Jimmy. You know what that is? It's the shit that happens while you're waiting for moments that never come."
Best speech in the history of media. I wish someone had just given me a card with that written on it coming out of college.

I didn't like Season 2 until the second time I watched it. If I was ranking them, it'd be 4,2,1,3,5. 2 is all about the end of the working class and how that has caused the drug trade to be the only viable economic option for most people who would otherwise be doing those manufacturing jobs.

yeah, I just didn't really care about the main plotline in season 2 as much. I found all of the new characters annoying, except for Beatrice. the D'Angelo and Omar plotlines were great though.
I heard season 5 takes a decline in quality, which is a shame. I'm still excited though

I FINALLY STARTED WATCHING THIS SHOW AND I'M FIVE EPISODES IN SO I CAN'T READ THIS THREAD IN CASE OF SPOILERS. BUT THIS SHIT IS AMAZING AND I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S TAKEN ME SO LONG TO WATCH IT. ALSO I HATE THAT I KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO OMAR IN THE END, UNLESS SEASON 1 OMAR GOES AWAY TO LIVE SOMEWHERE NICE AND THEN THERE'S A NEW OMAR AND THAT GUY DIES. I HOPE THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS.

2 is all about the end of the working class and how that has caused the drug trade to be the only viable economic option for most people who would otherwise be doing those manufacturing jobs. I like this, especially as a "meta reference" - the show always features people who are excluded from normal work making their own work through the drug trade. But the 2nd season was the most watched when the show aired, because it had a more sympathetic group (white people, people with children.) This seems to have been intentional, too, which is kind of funny. Sadly, I fall into this group because I started watching this show during the second season. I also really enjoyed my time as a Teamster Steward when I worked at UPS, and that kind of tilted my view of the season. Plus Boris. "Did he have a face? Hands? Then it wasn't us. " If I had to rank the seasons, I'd go 4, 1, 2, 3 and 5. I tend to re-watch Season One the most, though. 3 and 5 were the most heavy handed in the way they drew out the plot, which sunk it for me. 3 with the Iraq War allegory and 5 with the fake serial killer. edit- sorry! Just read you hadn't watched Season 5...
