I don't even know how to reply. That guy clearly took "how to use big words in an argument 101."

Right? I honestly don't know what to say to anyone who thinks that anything that went on in this thread is at all related to feminist theory.

To think, Feminism went from burning bras to talking about women in a movie about Facebook. What's next? Suffrage?

I don't know but I bet fail whale is pissed that we've managed to really feminist this thread up even more.

I must note that I loved Rooney Mara's character. Quick witted and called Mark out for the asshole he is. But I'm sure not everyone will see her that way. Wah.

I wonder if he's turning the tape over to Side B. "That triumvirate of Twinkies merely overwhelmed my resolve!" I learned all my feminism from riot grrl albums, so I have nothing to contribute to this conversation.

No, that was in reference to the misogyny discussion.
And I wasn't mad. I don't really care if someone refuses to see this movie. I just find it a little absurb that people here are making arguments for misogyny in this movie based on observations made out of context by some random critic. See the movie, form your own opinion, and then feel free to bash the producers all you want. But for what it's worth, I don't feel the film comes across as misogynistic at all.

I don't feel the film comes across as misogynistic at all. haha, you don't say. Also I can't speak for anyone else who's reasons for not wanting to pay to see a movie yet again glorifying the boys club, but I didn't just read jezebel and say "fuck that shit." Do you think we don't know people who have seen it or something? Basically everyone I know warned me to not see it because they knew it would piss me off, why would I spend twelve plus dollars just to find out that people I already trust are right? When it comes to netflix I'm sure I will watch it, just to make sure, but this is the same reason I checked Ayn Rand books out of the library instead of buying them. I like to know what I'm critiquing, sure, but fuck if I'm going to support it with money.

No, but really. I had no interest to see this movie in the first place. Can I fully critique how misogynistic this movie is? No, but I don't think I've even touched on the subject for that exact reason. I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know how bad it really is. I've heard enough about it from people that have seen it though who I trust, and I have even less interest to see it than I did before.

well, saw it again last night. if you leave that movie thinking that the rich white dudes are behaving well, or even like human beings most of the time, you're not paying attention.

And if you read any of those reviews thinking those viewers thought that, you're not paying attention either. It's just that some people don't want to see a movie about how horrible people are horrible and get away with it, and even the innocent people are just stereotypes. Knowing the guys are douchebags doesn't help you learn the girls aren't crazy slutty bimbos. I guess what anyone is asking is why would anyone want to see a movie where all the characters are detestable if none of them "get theirs" or it isn't hilarious or srsly compelling storytelling or some other bullshit idek anymore.
But really, for everyone who reads women asking about something that smells a bit like women looking out for their interests and puts on their defensive pants to stand against the hoard of angry feminists: Seriously. No one "bashed" this movie, or ever forgot that they hadn't seen it and were just going off reviews (I read four that all said the same thing about the women in the movie, not just some "random" article). I actually thought about seeing it this weekend just to see for myself but I'd rather not waste $7 to back up an argument on a message board, haha.

frankly, Tanya, I guess what i'd say is that i like art that reaffirms my worldview, which is to say "there are shitty people that go unpunished basically running things."
edit: this is really depressing, but I guess I never see people get theirs, and almost see it as unrealistic.

I don't think so, I think these dudes and dudettes are saying some relevant stuff here. but if you follow the logic of "people aren't taking the right message from this, it's your fault, artist," then you can blame the Beatles for the Manson killings.
