After a couple years of dismissing this band as boring, indulgent hipster garbage I finally actually listened to the new Ariel Pink record "Before Today." Very great. Pink is kind of a little snot, but also a seriously prolific and imaginative songwriter, his vibe is all his own. His older stuff is more lo-fi and is taking me some effort to get into. The new record is really cool though...spooky, grandiose pop that still retains its grandiosity even with deliberately lo-fi production, totally schizophrenic songwriting (so much ground is covered within a single song in terms of varying parts and ideas), wide range of sounds that venture from Broadway-style big pop, to post punk, to butt rock, bass-heavy dance music, high-life, even venturing into easy-listening territory on "Can't Hear My Eyes," but it all sounds like him. The album is incredibly Los Angeles, I can't imagine it coming out of anywhere else.
Anyone else here listen to this guy? Seth? Anyone?
for the uninitiated, check out this amazing song (set to altered scenes from the 80's aerobics movie "perfect")...be sure to stick it out for the BEST CHORUS OF THE SUMMER, which starts after 2:00.
and an official video for "bright lit blue skies," also off the new record:
also, this song is SO GOOD, also a new one...I swear that's John Maus on the "knock on the door" lyric:

Finally checked out the new record, and I'm digging it. My favorites so far are Round and Round, Fright Night, and Revolution's a Lie. I'm totally liking the 80s vibe/lo-fi-ness of it.

holy fuck! just saw this band live. SO awesome. they played "gettin' high in the morning," wtf? os mutantes was headlining, and they closed their set with a cover of "purple haze" and ariel was onstage singing and pretending to play various acoustic guitars. definitely not something i ever thought i'd see...

So, I still can't stop listening to Before Today. So good. I also keep on forgetting to check out his other stuff, so I should do that. Also, I really love that he sampled this old Ethiopian pop song for Reminiscences. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjFe0tq5Yc4

I liked this for a short period but my overwhelming urge to punch him in the face ruined that.
