I have been listening to the Modern Lovers nonstop for a solid 10 months and I'm looking for some more protopunk/precursors to punk.
I pretty much only listen to the Modern Lovers, Lou Reed, and Velvet Underground, so whatever you dudes are into I am interested in checking out.

You should check out the Electric Eels and Urinals albums posted in the upload thread, Cary. Very early 70s, so not quite as early as VU or the Stooges or anything like that, but definitely early on. More blatantly trashy and crude than the earlier protopunk bands though.
I love all the bands you listed, also big into The Pagans and Television if we count them as protopunk.

The Dictators. If you can find the song Stay With Me by the Dictators, you will never stop loving them, as I have.
They're also noteworthy because Ross the Boss of fucking Manowar played guitar for them before he was in Manowar.

really really digging both of these. thanks! especially urinals. super trashy like you said, but also real tight and put together if that makes sense.
Also, The Modern Lovers do a great cover of "Foggy Notion" by The Velvet Underground while it was still unreleased if you're interested in that. It's on Precise Modern Lovers Order, which is a great live album in a sea of shitty live albums.

I was listening to Reed's Transformer the other day. what a weird, snippy little album.

It's cliche but Transformer would definitely be on my list of favorite records. "Wagon Wheel" is a wonderful song.
My rank is now babby and I wish for it to never change.

Cliche or not, Transformer rules.
That dictators song is pretty great, Traumasponge. The only version I have heard so far is a shitty youtube recording, but still awesome. Also, Bruce Springsteen counts down the opening track for that album? Insane.

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but Captain Beefheart and some krautrock could be seen as protopunk, even though they don't really sound like punk at all.

I absolutely love Captain Beefheart. Why the fuck haven't the Stooges or the MC5 been mentioned yet?
I don't know if it really counts as protopunk per se but Brian Eno's early solo albums did post-punk before there was any punk to be post- about.

Stephie mentioned The Stooges...
Thanks Sean for talking about Captain Beefheart so much two years ago, which eventually made me buy Safe as Milk!

The Dictators were weird, their first album is like one long joke (but it's actually pretty funny) but then you get to Bloodbrothers and it's just awesome rock music with a silly vocalist.
