I spent the other day looking over every movie released in the past decade (or at least extensive lists). I've always been obsessed with lists and the end of a decade is always accompanied with them. So, here's my list, in order, of the top 50 movies of the decade (I wanted to do 100, by my brain turned to mush before I got there). I wish I could say that it is entirely thorough; alas I've missed a few films that everyone says are great. Anyways, list away!
01. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) 02. Memento (2000) 03. Requiem for a Dream (2000) 04. High Fidelity (2000) 05. The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (2001) 06. The Dark Knight (2008) 07. I <3 Huckabees (2004) 08. Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) 09. Big Fish (2003) 10. The Bourne Identity (2002) 11. Garden State (2004) 12. Donnie Darko (2001) 13. I don't know. I really like the Pirate movies, but there is no way I would have put them on a "best of" list, especially when movies like Whale Rider, Amelie, or Secretary (just off the top of my head) aren't included.

Haven't seen Amelie (though everyone says that I should), haven't heard of Whale Rider, and totally missed Secretary in my searches. Ghost World gets bumped and Secretary slides in at 36-ish.

Definitely see Amelie and Whale Rider if you can. Both are excellent.

One of my goals for the coming year is to be able to refine this list with everything I'm supposed to have seen yet haven't. Not that I don't like my list...

6. Sunshine Cleaning 7. Charlie Bartlett 21. Children Of Men 36. O Brother, Where Art Thou? Still need to see those top three, and I missed the last in my searches. Could have sworn that was late 90s rather than 2000. Might make my list... lol, so much for thorough.

Sunshine Cleaning was realllllly mediocre. Man, Children of Men was so good, though.
The movie of the decade was probably There Will be Blood. Close runner ups include City of God, Royal Tennenbaums, Wall-E and The Hurt Locker.
That last one is probably only on there because it is freshest in the mind. Sure it was the best movie released last year, but who knows if it'll hold up the way the other ones have. But it may just hold up because of how the decade regressed in terms of women in Hollywood, and how Kathryn Bigelow blew every stereotype and overcame Hollywood's overwhelming sexism to make the best "balls to the wall" action movie of the decade.

good lists so far. I made it to 40 and then gave up, but I probably missed a few. I'm not so sure on the order, but the first 10 are pretty solid 1. Kill Bill Vol. 2 2. V for Vendetta 3. A Serious Man 4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 5. Spirited Away 6. Mulholland Dr. 7. Drag Me to Hell 8. Inglourious Basterds 9. Burn After Reading 10. The Host 11. The Village 12. Borat 13. Pan's Labyrinth 14. No Country for Old Men 15. Hostel Part II 16. Big Fish 17. Kill Bill Vol. 1 18. Mean Girls 19. Kung Fu Hustle 20. Sweeney Todd 21. Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban 22. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 23. Where the Wild Things Are 24. Fantastic Mr. Fox 25. Wall-E 26. Audition 27. Up 28. Saw 29. Saw VI 30. Saw II 31. The Prestige 32. Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl 33. Bruno 34. Spiderman 2 35. Signs 36. Juno 37. Children of Men 38. The Onion Movie 39. Death Proof 40. Ponyo 41. -Reserved for "Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus"- (wishful thinking) seeing The Life Aquatic this week, and seeing the Royal Tennenbaums on almost every list of the best movies of the decade, makes me really want to watch Royal Tennenbaums. unfortunately, my video store's copy is damaged

I thought Audition was '90s? (...checks...) Ya, thought so. I need to see that again. The first time I was too tired to sit through it, feel asleep about half way through, then awoke to some of the most intense torture ever!!!

How has The Departed been left off each list? or The Good Shephard? or Mystic River? I will not partake in such a disgrace. The Village? SIGNS?

I hate making lists as much as you people apparently love making them so I won't participate, but goddamn do I love The Departed.
And shut up I liked The Village!

Maybe I should make a "Top 50 movies I still need to see before making this list" list. >.< How has The Departed been left off each list? It was on my left-overs and probably makes my top 100. Also, you put Hot Fuzz and not Shaun of the Dead? WTF. Same as my statement above. I really, really like Hot Fuzz 10x more than Shaun, though.

Totally forgot to ask this earlier: how would y'all list the movies with sequels? As one entity or as seperate works?

I can't be bothered to figure out 50.
1. Requiem for a Dream -- Kicked my ass and left me feeling numb and gross.
2. Adaptation -- best damn screenplay ever written, excellent acting.
3. Pan's Labyrinth -- great imagination, very good writing and production values.
4. Memento -- sweet thriller with interesting subtext about who we are and what we know.
5. Children of Men -- just liked it at first, but it really got under my skin and had a big impact on me. It works on so many levels, including as great fucking entertainment.
6. Eastern Promises -- most underrated flick of 2007. Fucking brutal and sad.
7. Zodiac -- second most underrated flick of 2007. Tied with Se7en for Fincher's best movie.
8. The Fountain -- not for everyone but definitely for me
9. A Serious Man -- Coen bros doing their thing. Back up to form with this and No Country.
10. The Dark Knight -- 'cause it was intense and a lot of fun and this list needed an action movie.

I probably couldn't even name 50 movies from the last decade. If I had to make a list, it'd include at least the Lord of Rings trilogy, There Will Be Blood and Wall-E.

I can't do this.Sadly, because I've probably not seen 50 movies made in the last 10 years. For some reason I've been watching a lot of older movies. But I do agree with some of the things here.I'll try a top ten:
1. In Bruges 2. Ichi The Killer 3. The Matador 4. Star Trek 5. the Orphanage 6. Shaun of the Dead 7. Eastern Promises 8. O Brother, Where Art thou? 9. Sin City 10. High Fidelity
These aren't in order at all.And I'm sure once I've thought about it more it'd change. But, that's the best I can do for now.
And I'm going to get hate for this, but seriously, how are the Dark Knight and the Departed on these lists? I couldn't stand these movies. They were decent at best.

I agree about the Departed. It's good, but for a Scorcese flick it was pretty disappointing.
Especially when you consider that it was just a remake. Oh, and the heavy-handed symbolism at the end was really bad.
Dark Knight, though, proved that action tentpoles can have well-developed themes, interesting characters, and a nice plot. Even with its problems, I enjoyed it a lot for what it was. Although I just watched Batman Begins again and I think it actually might be even better.

I was about to agree with Batman Begins being better but then I remembered how awful Katie Holmes was in that movie. I wish they had gotten Maggie Gyllenhaal for both.

Amelie and Secretary are pure unadulterated filth.
Good call on Big Fish, though. I hate that films with tons of imagination get kicked off lists so that bullshit can stay.
Sunshine Cleaning was decent, but #6, Jess? Man, that's a pretty bold call. I mean, it's not even the best 2000s film in which Alan Arkin plays a crazy old man with "Sunshine" in the title.
And as far as 09 is concerned, I'd have Where the Wild Things Are and The Hangover somewhere in there. I'd maybe switch your Kill Bills, too.
Cei, make sure Mean Girls is somewhere near the top.
