Has anyone else seen this? I just found out today that one of my friends watches it now too. This lady was on last week. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLFmnnw13a4She lost her fucking teeth in that house. I saw one from the first season yesterday that had a lady with 75 cats taken out of her house... and about 40 of them were dead. Craziness.

I know a legit hoarder and it's terrifying. Her Christmas tree and yard decorations are up all year. So are her Halloween things. Her entire backyard is full of those blue plastic containers that my poor ass always used as laundry baskets. I've seen her carry like twenty umbrellas from her car to her house. It's actually a mini van, and it's sliding door is always open and FULL of jargon. I always see people drop things off for her too, which always pissed me off.
I've been so interested in watching this. I've seen hoarders on tv before, but never in depth. Thanks for reminding me.

People give her more stuff? Jeez.
I'm probably interested because my mother has toed the line. Compulsive shopping and a problem with getting rid of anything, plus odd habits like keeping little baggies of dog hair (wtf?). Not piles of trash, but still very cluttered and a problem with keeping things clean. There's a couple rooms with very small pathways, and my old room has shrinking paths now. The house smells funky now too, and I can't figure out why. She just buys a bunch of air fresheners...
The episode tonight has a lady who is like a half hour from me.

This show pretty much breaks my heart and scares me to death all at once. I know that I have a problem with hoarding, and even though I keep telling myself that it isn't THAT bad, or at least I can recognize and get rid of trash and food that has gone bad or that even if the house is a mess and I only have paths through some rooms, at least there isn't weird rotting things under piles...But I know that I still have the component that keeps me from getting rid of really dumb stuff because my brain keeps telling me that "I might need it someday" or "I can remember when I got this" and so I have to keep it. It sucks.
It's weird watching the show and seeing some of my thought processes (that seem totally reasonable when I think them) echoed by some of the people they are treating. And when I say weird I actually mean batshit terrifying.

Watching that just pissed me off. Apparently they found two dead cats that were lost or trapped and without food because this idiot chose to live in squalor. I don't really understand how she's capable of even living in those sorts of conditions. She can't wash clothes and she doesn't have teeth. What the fuck? Mental instability or not, that shit is just ridiculous. Those poor kitties!

Is there some reason this happens a lot to old people? Because I can think of two off the top of my head--one that lives a street over from me, another that died in a car accident last year because his headlights weren't on and a truck demolished his van--and they're both over the age of 60.

I think it's less that it happens more as people get older, so much that it's often only when the rest of the family or friends reach a point that they can't deal or help anymore that it gets to the frightening levels that it can get.

Yeah, true. It's just sad. I think it's also a situation where people are just disgusted and can't bring themselves to get these people help.

I find hoarders insanely interesting. Partly because I suspect that my mom might head down this road in the future. I have argued with her over throwing away peeling plywood furniture and she was just "BUT.. IT"S WOOD. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH WOOD COSTS!" and she has this really odd thing about toilet paper rolls.
You know how there's always 2 or 3 sheets left attached to the cardboard core? She'd save those insisting "If we run out of toilet paper you'll be thankful for those 2 sheets." Except now it's become it's own thing and she saves the cardboard even if there aren't any sheets attached. Now she also saves the paper outer wrapping. I have to go in weekly and clear out the shelves in the bathroom.
When asked why she just says "I dunno".

This show scares me more than Intervention. There's just something so..unnerving about it. And I get so incredibly pissed off when these people have animals. If they're going to live in that psychotic mess and not get help -- fine. But the animals should be removed from the situation.

I'm so angry at tonight's episode. Both are so bad that the kids are removed. seriously, animal shit everywhere?
then that bitch had 17 dogs and god knows how many cats. AC came to take them and she says "but i love them all!" If you loved them, you wouldn't have let that senior dog become so infested with fleas that it has to be put down. Or keep them in tiny kennels and breed them so you could have more.
Rot.

I accidentally got sucked into about 10 minutes of this show the other day, and it was so sad and scary I just had to change the channel. The woman had her pets taken from her for their health and safety...I don't understand how the whole place hadn't been condemned. I feel so bad for people that are that unhappy and who have been so ruined by life that can't find or get help or support, and literally end up burying themselves in garbage. Things are so awful that they aren't able to get whatever else they need, and every hurt feeling and/ or good or bad memory all becomes wound up in the crap and dirt that fills every inch of their homes. Blarrghhhhh. It's heartbreaking, and I flat out can't deal with it. And also, it makes me kind of itchy, looking a goo-covered, crust-laden upholstery/ shower curtains. Blarrghhh.

I watched an episode the other day where they removed 3,000 pounds of poop. Literally, human feces. It was the most horrible thing ever.

We're house-hunting right now and I think the house we saw yesterday belonged to a legitimate hoarder. There was crap everywhere, like a stack of calendars from 1985. The place didn't look like it had been even dusted since he moved in almost 40 years ago.
