Oh yeah, I like this band, they remind me of Prayers On Fire-type Birthday Party for some reason. So they count, yeah?
I can't say I approve of the wardrobe choices, but whatever. It's music!
I also didn't watch this to begin with, and it was a mistake.
I usually don't care for live stuff but this is pretty cool.

OK. Eventually. I remember trying like. . .years ago, but I don't remember what I downloaded and I don't remember much about it beyond, yes, that vague sort of sound.

By the way: Get Soundtracks For the Blind by Swans, and make time to listen to the whole thing in one sitting (but M. Gira will come to your house and cannibalize your little sister if you download it, so don't do that ). It'll change your mental state. !!

I'm attempting to upload Trout Mask Replica right now. Everyone needs to hear this, especially fans of The Birthday Party, Tom Waits, and Old Time Relijun. And would that be a good place to start with Swans? I like what I've heard from them but have no idea what to get first. Captain Beefheart- Trout Mask Replica

Depends. Their early material and their late material is vastly, vastly different. Their early material has no melody, it's all bass, drum, sampler and drone with Gira basically yelling his brains out over it. Then they got sick of being infamous for how punishingly loud their live shows were, so they purposely made The Burning World, I think, which are really standard, 'nice' songs (although really gloomy and depressing) but, compared to their other work, not really interesting in a lot of ways. Their later material is kind of. . .surreal, I guess.
I think Children of God is a good place, though, because it's not too much in one direction. Later material is more accessible in a lot of ways, but won't tell you much about what the early sound was, and that sound is still present to some degree in Children of God. And the Skin material that's attached to that is good as well, although really slow and depressing.
I'll download that but might not listen for a while. A lot of the time I'm just not going to be receptive to new [to me] music--it could be amazing but I'll be indifferent to it, because I'm having some kind of super apathy fit, and nothing affects me at all.
EDIT: My first impression is "even too weird for me". The music and vocal don't seem to be. . .related.

I really like I'll Swallow You from that for some reason. . .I think it's kind of a weird thing though, because while the other stuff touches on religious weirdness, it gets. . .a bit much, over the whole album. Apparently he just spent ages sitting around watching televangelists and decided that's what the album would be about. I like Greed/Holy Money a lot but that's really uhm, if you're not in the right mindset for it, you just sort of go "what the hell is this noise?" There's something about it that's just really different and moving for me. It's the vulnerability that the lyrics are expressing against the really brutal music, I think.

I'm certain almost no one gets Trout Mask Replica on their first listen. The first half has a couple of semi-accessible songs, but the lenght alone makes it pretty overwhelming. It's not exactly easy-listening after you've started to like it more, either. Nevertheless (or maybe because of that), I love it.

I still can't get on board with her, I don't know if it's sexism or what. I suspect sexism simply because the first thing that pops into my head is "Oh God she's so pretentious" and, well. . .it's not like some of the male musicians I listen to are any better. Maybe it's something simpler, like I honestly don't like her voice (except in "Thirsty Animal" by EN), or I haven't really given her a chance. . .hmm.

never checked out Lydia Lunch outside of Teenage Jesus & the Jerks but they were fucking good. in the time since i last posted in this thread i've fallen deeply in love with Swans. like fuuuuuuuuck where was this band before in my life? The Bridgeheads fit here too, i think. that's a link to their website, which has a link for a free download of one of the better albums to come out this year so far.

i'm just about finished listening to White Light from the Mouth of Infinity for the first time. this album confirms them as one of my favorite bands, shit. i can barely believe this is the same band that played "Freak." i'm so excited to explore the rest of their catalog, shit. "rest" means everything after WLFTMOI, and The Burning World. i'm in no rush, though, i want to spend a lot of time with all of this music.
now, they don't really belong in a post-punk thread, but how many of you listen to Amebix? i ask because i know many of you guys listen to more aggressive music, and they were a fucking amazing mixture of post-punk and early hardcore-as-fuck thrash. i love them.

So listening to Trout Mask Replica while extremely high in the sky is probably one of my favorite musical experiences of the summer. This thread is partially to thank for that.

I'm so weird about M. Gira's music sometimes. First time I listened to Eden Prison, I was like, "Eh, I guess it's good. . ." Now I'm listening to it for the third time today. There's a lot of delayed 'clicking' with him, for some reason.

I have been listening to Crime and the City Solution really, really a lot. For years I had their albums sitting around and thought they were OK, but overall I was just bored, not feeling it. This song is good for their mid-80s stuff, with Rowland: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQGV4Gb9N9gAnd this is good for the later couple albums: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wTWh9tWQhM

psychicteensnetwork.bandcamp.com/my friend's band...I think they fit in with the genre. I also "whored" them out in another thread, but I figured I'd bump this. check it out also, I'm in a post punk mood and I want to hear more than what I already know.
