CW frm TL: Herds s/t (Fashionable Idiots '09) Zs Music Of The Modern White (The Social Registry '09) Burial Hex/Zola Jesus split (Aurora Borealis '09) Ornette Coleman Ornette! (Atlantic '61) Nihill Krach (Momentum '07) Lightning Bolt Earthly Delights (Load '09) they all friggin' rule. The Herds LP looks/sounds/is beautiful and it came with a free download of pretty much their whole discography to date (one 7" shortplayer, one 7" single, and the longplayer). I also got two CDs kick me out of this thread: (Angel) Deradoorian (of Dirty Projectors) Mind Raft shortplayer and another I won't mention because I spun it a few nights ago and it sucks and I don't want to draw any undeserving attention to it and and and and. What really grinds my gears is that I was told it was akin to the best of Motörhead, Disfear, and Entombed in a heavy metal blender but what I heard was definitely more Rise Against, Disturbed, and Linkin Park than anything good. Who knew there was such a fine line between excellence and everything counter? I also chose it over one of three other items I was considering That doesn't have anything to do with vinyl but I needed to say it. Listening to the LPs above is helping me shake those ill memories of a former time. Also, in case anyone was wondering, Zola Jesus/Burial Hex split was at Origami Vinyl in Echo Park; Nihill and Lightning Bolt were at Vacation in Los Feliz; and Herds, Zs, and Ornette Coleman were at Amoeba in Hollywood. Amoeba doesn't need any help, but definitely hit up Origami and Vacation if you're in the area. Origami has a small but broad collection. Vacation mostly has the louder, heavier side of guitar-based music. It's a bit more expensive than most places, but they also carry stuff that I'd only otherwise find online.

Because it's more about collecting something awesome than listening, for now at least. This is why I don't call myself a collector. I could care less about what press I have or how limited the run of a certain color is, I just want the music.

Hahaha, this exactly for me/Casey. I never really understood this. Why buy it if you can't play it right when you get it? As soon as we can afford it we want a record player, and instead of saving up for that yet I'm building up my collection and grabbing shit up when I can. And also, I'm realllly big on the collecting aspect. I love collecting shit and records are so fun.

Motherfuck, I got the Jazz June's Breakdance Suburbia 7" in the mail the other day, and listened to side B, and the whole 20 second start is all pops and clicks. It was only 4 bucks, but what a bummer.

Part of it is that guy from Burial Hex, Clay Ruby, is in about a billion bands and they're all at the very least interesting if not enjoyable. There's this old record store in San Francisco that backs him (hard). As for Herds, that release is on Fashionable Idiots, which I generally pay attention to. They also have members of Charles Bronson and Get Rad, among others. Just that fast midwest hardcore sound that rules.

Aquarious Records in SF or elsewhere? The one in SF sucks and the people who work there are even more pretentious than normal.
Also, CDR, is that Herds record good? I see it everywhere.

I'm pretty sure there's only one Aquarius Records, in San Francisco. They don't really have any normal people music. I've only been in the actual store once (I live in LA), and I got a CD for $7 that turned out to be super limited and worth a bit. I didn't like the CD so that was pretty cool for ebay. I wouldn't say they're pretentious, but the staff did seem more concerned with cataloging everything than engaging their customers. They didn't seem anymore aloof than anyone at Amoeba. Or maybe I'm pretentious too. Just, I trust that they stock what they like. It doesn't make sense to have operated a record store for over 30 years with the intention of being elitist and exclusive. Different strokes for different folks. Herds: I think it rules, it might end up on my favorites of '09 list. It's this fast hardcore with an almost psychedelic edge that seems to have picked up in popularity lately. If you like stuff like Sex Vid then you'd probably like it. Since Sex Vid are likely done it's a good excuse. www.myspace.com/herdsmilwaukee

Yeah, I've only been there once but I couldn't even concentrate to look around because of all the daggers stared by employees, I mean, I've been to a lot of record stores and only a handful are ever into talking to customers in a normal manner anyway.
I really like Sex Vid (thank you stephiebuns <3) so I will definitely check that out, thanks!

Haha Amoeba is definitely pretentious, too.
Like Casey said, I can only think of a few record stores ever that didn't have pretentious, distant employees, ha.

Like Casey said, I can only think of a few record stores ever that didn't have pretentious, distant employees, ha. Yeah. It's so fucking irritating. Although, the one good independent record store here has awesome employees. They're so nice and helpful, and if you can't find something they're always so eager to order it for you. I have two gift certificates to that store, I need to go.

About the whole, dickish attitude from record stores, in Long Beach the store Fingerprints, I believe is what it's called, is kind of hit or miss with their employees. But the owner is pretty fucking awesome.Talked to him for a little bit one day and he was pretty cool.

Jack White has a record store in Nashville that only takes cash. I don't know if that's "indie-cool" or not, or maybe you don't know about it. From the pictures I've seen of it, it seemed to just be loaded with his music. Then again, his label of the same name put THIS out, so maybe it's interesting. I remember I drove down to Fingerprints once because there was some cool preorder deal for a record I wanted, and they were the only record store in Southern California to be a part of that deal. When I got there I completely forgot about the preorder. whoops. I got some Deathspell Omega and I think something from Boris.
