Western Settings - Old Pain (FFO Iron Chic mixed with OWTH)
My favorite EP of the year so far. And that's saying a lot considering Tender Defender (basically just Latterman) released their EP this year.

I really dig the new Modern Baseball and Hotelier records but pop punk has definitely gone from "everyone sounds like D4" to "everyone sounds like The Weakerthans."

I was thinking about that last year after checking out Citizen's new record, only replace "everyone sounds like The Weakerthans" with "everyone is trying to sound like the last Brand New album." Not that I have a problem with that...
The new Thrice & Architects records have been getting a lot of plays from me since they came out.

"everyone sounds like D4" Speaking of, I would very much like a new Dopamines record in addition to the OWTH record slated for this year. Also... I just realized that it's been 8 years since CIVILWAR. The world needs a new D4 record. "everyone is trying to sound like the last Brand New album." This was sooo prevalent the last few years, but i also didn't care because I love that stuff and it's all pretty good. But like, Balance and Composure, Daylight/Superheaven, Citizen, Title Fight, Basement, etc etc, all hopped on that train hard. Forgot that the new Saosin dropped this month, so I'm giving it a listen right now. Really good so far, but it really makes me wonder how much better that first Saosin album would have been with Anthony.

There's definitely been a huge influx of bands that sound like a mix of MBV and/or Brand New the past few years, though. I gave the new Saosin a listen while cooking burning dinner the other night and enjoyed it a lot. Was pretty surprised.

of Montreal announced a new album coming out in August and debuted a song. It's...okay, very much a throwback to post-Hissing Fauna techno-pop weird noodlings, which looking at the past decade is Barnes' sort of default sound. I'm okay with it. I do think it's funny that while OM is ostensibly my favorite band still producing music, my real exploration of them came at the decline of Elliot's enthusiasm for them, and from pretty much since we started dating (five years ago wtf) he just can't stand them. Haha.
I don't think anyone on here is really into Kevin Barnes or whatever, but it is kind of a funny/weird situation. We were just talking about it and he asked if I disliked any bands he liked, but the best I could come up with was the Arcade Fire, which isn't really the same because A)I don't hate them or anything and B)he doesn't love them or anything. Anyone experienced this?

Finally checked out the new Hotelier and I think it'll have to grow on me. There's a few songs that I really love but it didn't grab me as much as their last record did. Granted, that's a really high bar to clear.
Tiny Moving Parts' new record is pretty good too. The vocals kind of turned me off from the band at first but they are excellent musically and the last three songs on the album are so good. I wanted to see them this weekend but I can't afford it.

It blows my mind how relatively big TMP has gotten. They are from right outside of Fargo, so I ended up seeing them a few times when they were just opening for touring bands. Never thought much of them, but their last album was pretty good. Happy for them.
Listening to the new Angel Du$t record right now and I think this might be a dark horse for album of the year. I was trying to put my thoughts down, but i found this quote from Metalsucks' profile of it and thought it summed it up better than I could.
This is seriously one of the better hardcore/melodic hardcore albums that I have heard in a while. Lots of nice melodic hooks and choruses, but definitely a good dose of aggression. Definitely worth a look.

Man I do not like Angel Du$t. It's like just pop played by tough guy hardcore dudes and it comes out kinda like pop punk and the lyrics are pretty bad and the production is like puzzlingly bad and just ugh. And I say that as a fan of TUI and Turnstile and pop music.
But then again it did take me a while to come around to Turnstile so maybe this'll be like that too. Kinda doubt it though.

I felt the same way about the first album, honestly, but this album is clicking with me a lot.

I'm super into the new Saosin and Thrice albums. They both just make so much sense to me.

Think all of my favorite records from this year have come out in the last few weeks. New Nails being the latest one.

I was all excited for the remix/remaster of You Fail Me but they kinda made it worse? It sounds more sterile and compressed now.

initial verdict: I like this a lot. there are a few cliche lyrics here and there and there's a few other moments that didn't jive with me that well, but overall, this is a really fun, enjoyable album. Matt works extremely well and I think him and Mark killed it on songwriting duties for the most part. i think Cynical, She's Out Her Mind, No Future and Rabbit Hole are my favorites on the first full playthrough. so happy and relieved right now.

Yeah I really like it too. Nothing mind-blowing but there's a lot of songs I dig. Matt really helps with harmonies and backing vocals, haha. I also like the joke songs, I'm glad they have a sense of humor again.

I was worried the joke songs wouldn't fit. Glad to hear they're good. I'm waiting til Friday to listen.
That new PUP record is so good.
Kinda digging the new Tiger Army as well. They've somehow gotten even cheesier and more rock & roll sounding. Some of the songs are straight rips of early 60s songs. Like, one of the songs sounds so much like "Runaway" by Del Shannon.

seriously, the joke songs were such a welcome respite and they fit really well. gonna give it another few good listens today, maybe go out frolfing if it's nice and put it on headphones. definitely a summer album.
i had no idea there was a new Tiger Army album, damn. they sure took their sweet ass time with that.
also, am i crazy or does the new Taking Back Sunday song sound like it would fit perfectly on New Wave or White Crosses? it honestly sounds like a song from that era of AM! to me right down to Adam's vocals, which i really have no problem with haha. i had to double check i clicked on the right song though.

The new Tiger Army is alright but not really what I was expecting. Feels like a Nick 13 solo record (which is basically what Tiger Army is at this point) only he's writing rockabilly instead of country songs now. There's a few really good songs on it, though.
The new Direct Hit! record is pretty good. Don't like it as much as Brainless God but it might grow on me.

I've heard some interesting metal from this year recently:
Schammasch- Triangle- strong Deathspell Omega influence but less spastic, more meditative than other bands of that ilk, and all the better for it Sylvaine- Wistful- un-tr00 post-bm stuff. the sparser the better in this case. Violet Cold- Magic Night- really melodic, instrumental "post-bm". almost poppy. kinda like the Ildjarn song "Eksistensens Jeger" without vocals. kinda what i wish Deafheaven sounded like.
