I was about to take over the awesome things thread, so.
I love Korean dramas, they have that excellent telenovella quality to them, they're silly and sad and bursting full of attractive cast members. I was going to start watching Shut Up Flower Boy Band this evening, but they've taken it down from Netflix or something, I can't see it on there any more.
My only problem with Korean shows is that they all start so badly. You're Beautiful is a perfect example; great show, but the first four episodes are really, really bad, all the characters feel like slapstick versions of themselves.
I'm thinking I might watch Protect the Boss, I've heard good things about the female lead. Or I could pick up Athena again, I liked that a lot. Netflix is so good, you guys get so many good shows compared to us!
EDIT: They've changed the name of Shut Up Flower Boy Band on Netflix, it's now Shut Up Let's Go. Hooray!

The first episode of Boy Band is actually really good but it also kinda gives you weird expectations for what the show is gonna be about. I enjoyed it more than the other Korean shows I've seen (just Boys Over Flowers and City Hunter) because it had a more cinematic visual style I guess? Also the translations are hilarious, which always helps my enjoyment.

I watched the first three episodes last night and yeah, wow, I was not expecting that! I think I'm going to plough through this one pretty quickly - it's really good! I cried a lot. Good stuff.

Shut Up Flower Boy Band is pretty unique in the kdramas I've seen (admittedly not heaps) in that it starts and just gets right into the story, and then the story actually develops every single episode until it hits the finish. It was actually plotted really well. But maybe this is much more common and I was just burnt by Mary Stayed Out All Night and Paradise Ranch, which were both bizarrely thin stories that just went round in easily preventable circles for 16 episodes.

There is no way I would have stuck it out with Mary Stayed Up All Night had Jang Geun Suk not been in it. And even he got on my nerves. So many of these shows could be resolved with a single conversation and it's frustrating rather than enjoyable to watch!
I remember with Mary Stayed Out All Night, it came to a good natural end at around episode 12 or 14... and then they kept making it.

My friend Jeena who taught in Korea for a few years said that the Korean tv cycle pivots on the 16th episode, like that's around when the people making it find out if it will continue or finish if it's intended to be ongoing, so she said a lot of shows start to really suck once they get past that because everyone kind of quits trying.

Haha I've only seen dramas with 16 episodes all up. If it's a good story that progresses it's a great format. But when they hinge solely on a love triangle shit gets very thin.

True. Also Jang Geunsuk is so good looking with all that plaid and that hair. And their alley snog is pretty hot.
And I really like the songs from it.

Actually yeah, I think My Bus is my favourite non-You're Beautiful K-drama song.
The one about the umbrella in Heartstrings is my least favourite.

There's one piece of background music in Boy Band that sounds just like Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica, which I love.

I'm trying to remember an Umbrella song and I'm coming up short. The only song I really remember from Heartstrings is the main one and the cute little Minhyuk one.
Haha Tim I think I know the one you mean.

Haha duh that's because It wasn't Heartstrings at all, sorry. It was Love Rain, which started out great and then got kinda dull. I haven't finished it though.
I'm really enjoying Shut Up... at the moment; I have the house to myself tonight so I think I'm going to have a bit of a marathon of it. Still so in love with Netflix for having so many shows up.

Tim showed me the first ep of Shut Up Flower Boy Band the other day and I liked it so I'll be watching it for a while! I only recognized L so he's currently my favorite hahaha. Well I mean I also recognized the super hot long haired drummer but I don't actually know his name I just know of him because everybody's in love with him.

Shut Up Flower Boy Band Episode 8 spoiler! Ji Hyuk told Su Ah that he's crazy about her! I don't think I've ever heard that in a drama before, it's all "I like you" and cryptic hugging. I'M SO HAPPY AHHH

Much like Cei, paradise ranch broke me. I had such high hopes(b/c I was a huge changmin fangirl) and it just wasn't good. Now every time I hear of a kdrama that might be good I dl it and then never watch it because I don't want to be disappointed. Or I watch the first few eps and never finish it.
I started sufbb ages ago and then promptly forgot about it (and should go finish that). And probably also Athenaposeiden because it wasn't horrible. I just couldn't deal with the main character tripping over himself and fainting every episode. And Sungkyunkwan scandal. Also not terrible just full of cheese. It seemed like it was going to be a girly empowerment story set in the past but it turned into a love triangle. Idk maybe it got better after I stopped watching. It's kind of like you're beautiful but in the past. Except the main actress's love interest isn't an asshole, he's just sheltered and naive.

Okay so finally watched episodes two and three of Shut Up Flower Boy Band and uhhhh totally did not see him getting killed by a bus coming? Once he was standing in the middle of the street I figured he was gonna get hit by something but judas killed by a bus? After getting clocked in the head by a baseball bat at that. Killed off the dude you think is gonna be the main character in episode two hahahah. I thought for sure it was a dream sequence until it wasn't.

Every time I think of watching a new k-drama, SUFBB has always piqued my interest, but I never seem to be able to press play haha. I have Netflix too so there's really no reason for me not to! You guys should totally watch Protect the Boss! It's a really fun drama. I didn't really care for the OTP, but Ji Sung (main lead) is hilarious and awesome (and super handsome). Plus Jae Joong looks really amazing in. Does anyone else have the problem of starting a drama and then never finishing it because it got kinda crappy? Maybe it's just been this past year, but a lot of the dramas that I started watching I couldn't finish. Like it starts off super good and I dig it, and then there's like too much I don't know. . . drama? haha. It makes me kinda sad because I love watching k-dramas, but I haven't really watched any this year that I loved through and through. Have any of you guys heard of the drama Heirs? It has Park Shin Hye from You're Beautiful in it. It's supposed to be a teenagery drama, but I've been enjoying it so far. asianwiki.com/The_Heirs_-_Korean_Drama

Omona, has it really been that long haha. I was busy with grad school for a while and when I finally checked back in, I didn't see the k-pop thread anymore ! But I started lurking again this past year, and I just saw this thread yesterday and I got super excited haha. Where did the k-pop thread go anyway?? Shall we revive it here? Here is a picture of the handsome Kim Jae Wook from his drama Who Are You? I didn't actually finish the drama, but he looked awesome in it Also, TOP has a new movie that's coming out pretty soon that I'm excited to see! I think it's called The Commitment. TOP is currently my new fav hah.

Oh well hey, glad to see you around again then. You are welcome to revive the Kpop thread if you like, but we all migrated to Tumblr and Twitter quite a while back. (Sorry I have nothing on topic to add, haven't watched a drama in years, just saying hi after I saw you post and was like, "Oh wow!")

Hah, aww I don't have a tumblr or twitter. I mainly just use social media for sharing/taking pictures of food haha. I don't really listen to much k-pop, so I really only recognize an idol when they turn up in dramas/movies I'm watching. But I'm super happy that you stopped in to say hi! : D!! I did eventually finish Hello Baby a while back haha.
