I was surprised to see we've never really had a thread specifically for this. Stand-up and sketch have been really helpful and enjoyable for me lately and I just want to talk about it all the time.
Has anyone seen Kristen Schaal's special from earlier this month? One of the best sets I've ever seen. She's a genius.

That was a great special. The genuine (at least I think it was genuine) confusion from the audience when she "screwed up" was great.
Kyle Kinane is one of my favorites right now, and course Louis CK's new special last night was awesome. And if you haven't seen Maria Bamford's new special, you need to see it immediately. It's her performing to her parents in her living room, and it's so wonderfully awkward and vulnerable.
It seems like everyone loves Jon Mulaney, and I think he's okay, but his bit about playing Tom Jones endlessly on a jukebox in a restaurant is one of the funniest things I've ever heard.

I read write-ups about it before I saw it and it seemed like people covering it couldn't tell she was doing that on purpose, which seemed impossible because the special ends with her dying in a techno-futuristic hospital in front of her fake children. That little kid who took the mic in the middle was AMAZING. Kinane and Bamford are two of my favorites as well. I saw the Special Special Special, the suicide bit is incredible. Kinane's joke about getting an unsliced pizza ends in one of my favorite lines ever, "This giant taco tastes like Italy!" I love DC Pierson too, and he put his entire show DC Pierson Is Bad At Girls on youtube here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoNfjR2eGVY

Oh man, I forgot about the little kid. That was the best part.
I just love Kyle Kinane. His pathetic sad-sack stories remind me of Patton Oswalt, but without the cynicism. I love his bit about taking his friends' kids to the water park. "Their names were Malcolm and Archer. I do not look like someone who would name their kids Malcolm and Archer. If I had kids, they would have nicknames like Miller Time and The Boss."

My friend Cyrus who's a comedian in New Orleans met him and Kinane brought him to see Cheap Girls at the Circle Bar after their show. On top of being hilarious, his punk background is great too. My one beef with him is the anti-hipster riff on Whiskey Icarus, a little too easy and that dude paid to see him, that's not very nice. Maybe it was an Ian Mackaye tribute, I don't know.
I feel like right now is a great era for the form, people are really trying a lot of cool new things. It seems like you have to actually be interesting to be successful now too. Like who was the last popular sensation who was a total hack, Jeff Dunham? We have made it out of the Dane Cook Larry The Cable Guy morass of the last ten years and have entered something new and wonderful.

I dunno, I love that anti-hipster rant, haha. "You can't get so entrenched in it that you end up with a Golden Girls neck tattoo riding a unicycle."
Comedy Central has been giving shows to comedians like candy lately, but it's all to people I don't like, like Amy Schumer, Anthony Jeselnik, Jeff Ross and Nick Kroll.

I actually find Amy Schumer's show pretty funny, especially because she seems to have dropped the "racial stereotypes coming from a cute little girl LOL" stuff. I'm supposed to do some improv stuff over the summer in the city. I'm scared and refuse to tell people IRL for fear of embarrassment.

Okay, yeah, I watched a couple episodes of her show and I like it. It doesn't rely on the shock humor as much as her stand-up. I liked the sketch about the bridal shower where the women all bought each other vibrators.

I love stand up, but I don't watch tv that much anymore so I'm missing stuff. I need to find where to watch more of it online besides youtube. I wish I saw Kristen Schaal's special!
And I caught some of Amy Schumer's show, I don't like everything but there is enough that makes me laugh so I'll probably keep watching it.

I watched Whiskey Icarus the other day and really enjoyed most of it. The second half kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but I'm drawing blanks as to why.

Can we talk about sketch shows some? Because I've been watching Human Giant for the first time over the past couple days and I don't think I've ever laughed this hard.

I feel like sketch comedy often loses both the articulate storytelling aspect of a good stand-up comedian, as well as the "yes, and..." nature of improv comedy. So many sketch shows are focused on absurdity, and I think it grates very quickly. I think Portlandia is pretty good, and I would definitely consider Louie a sketch show (with obviously longer sketches), but other than that, it's so often just way too much wacky shit without a solid premise.

I would say Mr. Show is a great example of something that often came up with impossibly brilliant premises. "the audition" is the most clever idea for a sketch I've ever seen, and there is basically no dead air in it.

Mr. Show, The State, and Human Giant are all the best examples of sketch shows. Human Giant could've been the best if all three actors didn't suddenly explode at the same time.
Let's also not forget Chappelle's Show was sketch.

They have an AM station that only plays comedy clips and I've been listening to it so much. There are a ton of comics I've wanted to check out but never did. There's tons of Bill Engval and shit like that but also lots of good stuff.
Been really digging Eugene Mirman and Hannibal Buress lately.

Eugene Mirman's great.
I saw this dude called Brent Morin on Conan a few months ago and his set still cracks me up to this day. Whenever I wake up and really don't want to get out of bed I just start yelling "MIKE, GET THE CAR!" and it makes me giggle every time.
