We all know you don't wanna see any other answer than Black Sabbath.

I'm actually looking to generate some discussion since this section hasn't seen much action lately.

Electric Wizard. Or Converge.

I feel like Electric Wizard and Converge are two different styles of heaviness (if that makes sense). The EW sound is basically pure, down-tempo heaviness while Converge is a lot more chaotic and noisy.
Boris is also a good answer. Heavy Rocks is one of the loudest records I've ever heard.
I'll also throw Sleep into the conversation.

nice topic choice, Corey. my buddies and I were actually discussing this on the ride home for a bit.
Converge definitely have their heavy moments, but they have a ton of super technical parts too, so I don't know if i could say they're the heaviest band ever. Sleep are up there, Dopesmoker and Holy Mountain are both mindblowingly heavy.
I'd also give a vote to Floor being far up on this list, if you disagree, go listen to either Scimitar or Iron Girl and tell me I am wrong. including Floor also kind of invites Torche into the conversation, and while they have written some incredibly heavy songs, they definitely have a poppy edge as displayed on Songs for Singles.
if we go into hardcore, Cursed gets my vote. one of the heaviest hardcore bands ever, especially when you get into II and III.

I have one Cursed album (I think it's Cursed III) but I don't listen to it much. The song you posted sounded a lot better than anything I remember hearing from them, so I think I'll check them out more. .
I'll also throw Isis into the conversation since their earlier stuff is some of the heaviest music I've heard. Their albums after that are much more atmospheric and tranquil, but their stuff like Mosquito Control and The Red Sea is crushingly heavy.

III is the hardest one to get into, imo. it's a bit weirder than the rest. i highly recommend checking out I and II before trying to dive back into III. such a shame that they broke up the way that they did.

I think production plays a pretty big part in "heaviness," to be honest. Take High On Fire, for example. I don't think anyone doubts they should be on this list. Snakes For the Divine is a great album, but it sounds really compressed and dull. Whereas the follow-up (produced by Kurt Ballou) De Vermis Mysteriis sounds like a fucking rock avalanche.

Yeah, I thought the same thing about HoF. Snakes for the Divine sounds like their take on a "classic metal" album which is probably why it's produced the way it is. I love that album, but it's definitely way different from the rest of their material.
I also agree that production usually plays a role in how "heavy" an album sounds, which is why I'm looking for bands with pure heaviness, a la Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard or Crowbar.

We should come up with the heaviest non-metal bands too.

Dinosaur Jr. can get pretty heavy at times, so could the Smashing Pumpkins.

ALSO, Kyuss.
I guess they are technically metal, though.

Billy Corgan's douchiness makes the Smashing Pumpkins mute in any argument, simply by principle.
I still stand by I Want You (She's So Heavy) being the originator of contemporary heaviness.

On that note, they (or I guess Billy) released a new album this year and I had no idea. I feel like that band has been irrelevant for most of the last decade, though.

I have a couple nominees. First, for just sheer exhaustive, endless, brain-fucking "too-heavy" drone, look up Nanocyborg Uberholocaust, which is drone recorded on the ice at the south pole.
I think Electric Wizard are the heaviest band in terms of big fuckin' grooviness.
That Isis track above withers my gonads every time I hear it. i wish they'd continued to sound like that.
In terms of like, corrosive, beatdown-esque madness, nobody will ever touch Agoraphobic Nosebleed.
And in terms of scary-heavy, Axis Of Perdition will always have this horrid place in my heart. Portal are comparable, too.

I dunno if you can call them a nonmetal band, but one of the heaviest bands i can think of that got popular was Queens Of The Stone Age.
