Even though we have two movie threads, I figured I'd make a new one for this.
What do you guys think of the nominations? Michael Fassbender was snubbed big time for his performance in Shame. Hell, that movie in general was ignored. The stigma against NC-17 ratings needs to go away. I knew Drive wouldn't get a nod for Best Picture, but Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close? Really? REALLY?! And Jonah Hill nominated for an Oscar? Who would have ever guessed that.
The Tree of Life gets my vote for Best Picture, but I'm very doubtful that it will win. It will almost certainly go to The Descendents or The Artist, but we'll see. However, if Lubezki doesn't win for Cinematography, it will be a fucking travesty. Say what you want about The Tree of Life, but it's arguably the most beautiful film ever.

Once again, I didn't see nearly enough Oscar nominated flics this year. In Best Picture, I only saw Incredibly Loud and Extremely Close, Moneyball, and Hugo, liking them in that descending order. Still kicking myself for missing out on the Tree of Life; hopefully it gets rereleased for Oscar season.
"Man or Muppet" has to be the best song from last year. Not that it has much competition.
Rooney Mara has to win for best actress. I'm glad the rest of the film got snubbed for the most part (save the score... where the hell is Reznor's nomination? It was perfection!), but her acting was incredible.

I've seen exactly one movie out of every single movie nominated this year.

Seeing Tree of Life in theaters was one of the most mesmerizing experiences I've ever had. It's a truly remarkable movie. I doubt it will get a re-release in theaters, but don't miss out if it does. I've seen three of the Best Picture nominees. ToL, Midnight In Paris, and The Descendants. All three of which are awesome. The Artist and Moneyball are both playing right now at the local indie theater, but I can't afford to go. As far as Rooney Mara goes, while I do agree that her performance was fantastic, she seems like a long-shot. Everybody seems to be saying either Viola Davis or Michelle Williams have it locked, but I haven't seen either of their roles so I can't attest to that personally.

I've seen Hugo, Moneyball and The Help. Hugo was great, Moneyball was okay and The Help was a heaping pile.
I'd be happy if Viola Davis wins though because she's the main reason that film is worth mentioning in a favourable light.
I'm debating whether to even bother with the other films. I like to have an opinion, but there's not much about any of them that appeals to or intrigues me.

Best Picture nominees I saw, in descending order: Hugo, War Horse, Moneyball, Midnight In Paris, Tree of Life. I really want to see The Artist, but it's not playing here. Don't really care about the others.

No love for The Descendants? It's great. Well-acted, funny, and touching.

it's dumb that Melancholia didn't get anything. I hope Tree of Life wins all its categories, but it doesn't really matter to me. I rarely think the "Best Picture" deserves its win anyway

I missed out on seeing Melancholia, but it sounds like Kirsten Dunst was robbed of a nomination. There was/is some major competition for Best Actress this year.

Oh yeah I actually really want to see Melancholia, I've heard from about a trillion sources that it was fantastic. And that she was a huge reason why, yeah.

I've heard it's the first Lars Von Trier I'll actually like. Which intrigues me. It looks super pretty, too.

I haven't seen any movies this year at all, but I hope Descendants wins just so I can say Academy Award Winner Dean Pelton.

Melancholia was high on my list to see last year. If I looked back at that imaginary list, I bet I missed the five movies I most wanted to see. Combine that with the fact that I willingly sat through Bad Teacher AND Your Highness and I feel like my decision-making abilities are suddenly complete shit.

I just saw the Descendants. It was a total miss for me. I thought it was boring, unfunny and just overscripted. The voiceover was completely superfluous and annoying and I just found it hard to care that much about George Clooney's character. And the annoying guy friend was such a pointless character. And the big final scene between George Clooney and his wife was so awfully written. It would have been so much better if most of his dialogue had been cut and you could just focus on the actual emotion rather than some over thought fake poetic statement.
The second half was much better than the first, and the oldest daughter was pretty great. The underwater crying scene was gorgeous.
But overall. Urgh. I can't believe it's been nominated for best screenplay. Shame on you, Dean Pelton. Shame on you.

You know what was nominated for nothing in any category and the actual best movie of the year? Attack the Block.

The trailer for that looked so good but it didn't come out here.

It's out on discs now, that's how I saw it. Super-limited release in the US too. Great fucking movie.

I saw Hugo today in 3D. I had no idea that it was going to be about George Melies. Loved everything about it. Hope it wins things.

I was really pleasantly surprised when it turned out that way too. I love that the trailers didn't give away much about the main story. Hugo pretty much charmed the pants off me.
