I've recently started to make a playlist that's just a big jumbled list of songs I enjoy. I usually listen to my iTunes on shuffle and then just keep adding songs as they pop up. It's currently at 35 songs.
I had an idea of people making their own 'mixtape' and posting links to download 'em. It's a damn good way to be introduced to new stuff and get to know people.
How long should they be or so? Cause I know mine is going to get super long in the long run.

I think people should make actual physical mix tapes and trade them.
I think I would do it. Used to love putting them together.
Actually...Just made one not long ago. I had a blast doing it.
Remember the thread I made questioning tapes and whatever....
Even though I haven't bought tapes from any bands that release things on cassette (I don't listen to many as it is), I've become intrigued by cassette culture. I want to release music on tape. hehe.

Tapes are pretty sweet, but I am far too lazy to convert my mp3s to some format to get 'em on tape.

That costs money! I just want to post a download link, haha. But if y'all want to trade some tapes, be my guest.
My playlist is at 53 songs now. I feel like I should stop because I don't know how many people would just sit and listen to 53 songs in one go (because they're in order, obviously). But there's just so many songs.

I can never just put songs in a mix. They need the right order and flow.

Yeah, I've been going through it and movin' songs here and there to get the right flow. I just need to stop thinking of songs because it's getting too long.

I'd listen to 53 songs straight! I'm so out of touch with music these days that I'd relish a ready made list to listen to. I can never just put songs in a mix. They need the right order and flow. This takes up something like 75% of the time I spend on mixes. When you find two songs that run together perfectly, its a pure slice of magic.

flow is crucial. can't have just song after songs. continuity in a mix is a must
another mix rule i have is no repeat bands. i hate mixes with a lot of the same bands.
curious to see what these mixes will be like.
perhaps i'll post one of my own.

I try not to repeat, but find it necessary sometimes. It can be especially useful to bookend a mix, both ends with the same artist.

Yeah, I don't repeat bands. Sometimes it's hard to pick between songs though.

I'm doing my best not to repeat. My list started as random, but I've put them into a somewhat cohesive order and it's soundin' pretty swell to me. Givin' it the run through to make sure it sounds alright.
It's done but the file's too big for mediafire. Goddammit.

For what it's worth, I don't think it matters. Generally my philosophy is that the transitions must be seamless or so jarring that it's funny. I have a few songs I like to use as bumpers specifically for that reason. That said, I also like to make playlists from my last.fm charts, and in those cases, I favor recognition of play count over continuity.

I'll throw something together, then. Probably. I like it when people listen to the music I listen to.
So should I put the mid-80s Neubauten right next to the Elysian Fields, or not? Ha-ha.

So I made it: linkI did make some rudimentary effort to ordering it, but I don't really know what I'm doing. Only concrete decision I made was "probably should put the song with two minutes of white noise at the end last". I just chose songs that occurred to me first, so I don't really understand some of them (why a recording of Michael Gira playing guitar in his house rather than a proper studio song? since when do I even like Gallon Drunk that much? why not any Cramps? etc.), but whatever. I think if I concerned myself overmuch with what I listened to all the time, the playlist would consist of nothing but Crime and Swans, ha-ha.

I've discovered, recently, that I'm ignorant to mainstream music in the same way people who like mainstream music are ignorant to the kind of music I like. So basically I have the most pretentious taste in music ever, haha.
Really though, I think I'd listen to anything outside of, like, ICP and enjoy it well enough; it's the bands whose music I'll actually buy and actively seek out that are like this.

I'm ignorant to modern mainstream music. not the shit I liked growing up in the 80's and 90's and stuff i'd never given a chance before.
There's just a lot of stuff I haven't listened to before. Know/have known plenty of people who like those bands/artists. Just haven't listened to them myself. Couldn't tell you why.
