Tinariwen - Tassili (but seriously why does one of the greatest groups in the world need to enlist members of WILCO and TV ON THE GODDAMN RADIO...for "western cred" or something? fuck) I've been putting off listening to this because of exactly that reason. I don't want to listen to those people on a Tinariwen record.

Gotta add the new Thrice to my 'favorites' list. Absolutely loving Major/Minor.

Hmmmm. Does the new Duran an count as this year or last? A 9 track version of the album was released in December 2010 only on iTunes. a 14 track physical version was released on March of this year. I really like it though. Sounds like their early 80's stuff.
Ah, fuck it, put it on my list anyway.

Today I listened to a new record by a group called Veronica Falls (on Slumberland recs...Pains of Being Pure at Heart fans oughta check this out) and was really impressed. It's not often that a new "indie rock" band captures my attention, but this group reminds me of a more upbeat Beach House meets The Mamas and the Papas or something...and the guitars sound kinda like The Clean. Dream pop-ish, but with an earthier feeling than most new "dream-pop" groups, sounds way more substantial and moody to me. Here's a track: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_SlRqk48LQ

I read the youtube comments (fucking dumb, i know) and they all call it super-hipster/indie, but I feel like it's got more going for it than that. It's like a weird dreamy power pop mix; the background harmonies and guitar riffs are especially rad. Thanks for the recommendation. Anyway, my favorite release this year is probably Bill Callahan's album Apocalypse. Pretty broody and heavy, but not overly-so because it's offset by songs like "America!" and "Universal Applicant," which is a definite growth mark over some of his older Smog stuff.

Gotta add the new Thrice to my 'favorites' list. Absolutely loving Major/Minor. M/m is my favorite album to come out in a while. I love the sound and feel of it so much. I've been trying to pick a favorite off of it and it's just so difficult because it's such a solid album. I can't wait to hear the songs live.

Definitely! The only song I don't love is "Call it in the Air." Not that I hate it but I find it kind of boring compared to the rest of the album.

I saw Veronica Falls at an instore 2 or 3 weeks ago. I didn't buy their album 'cause I didn't have any money.
Zola Jesus is probably my favorite so far this year. It's not as popular with the critics (or at least it seems that way). whatever. I didn't think I was gonna like it 'cause the few "singles" that were released prior to the album didn't bite me. Somehow they sound better within the context of the album.

Bought Blondie's new album. It's way better than I expected and I doubt I would have bought it if it wasn't super cheap on Amazon. I haven't had too much of a chance to listen to it thoroughly so we'll see how it plays out.

Major/Minor's also near the top of my list. I also really like the new Rwake album so I could see that moving up on my list too.

I am Disappoint: James Blake - James Blake This shit was extremely boring and I don't get why everyone is so fucking stoked over it. I read a recommendation to listen to it with big speakers/subwoofers and stuff but it's still boring as shit. Then he decides that he's gonna be a ~*~*~*~*~holier than thou~*~*~*~* hipster and shit all over other dubstep.

Listening to The Field - Looping State of Mind right now. Solid. Really solid.
And yes, I realize my list is pretty much the Pitchfork Best New Music list and IDGAF.

Mine is basically Pitchfork's BNM too, but a little more electronic.
The James Blake thing was so much more disappointing because all of his releases last year were amazing, then he goes all 'dubstep meets pub singer' on his album. Then he released a really interesting kinda grimy, deep instrumental 12", then makes another even shittier EP, but this time with Bon Iver on a track, which should have been great.
edit: wat there is no way i'm the only one who really liked the new fleet foxes

Checked out the new Dead To Me and Cobra Skulls albums today. Both are really solid and definitely warrant more than a few future listens. Dead To Me's slowly becoming one of my new favourite bands.

duude is it good? I was gonna get it, but then I saw that it was a collaboration with Elton John and decided against it.
New Oneohtrix Point Never is amazing! Definitely in the top 5 albums of the year for me, which is surprising since I didn't like his drooly synth wankery on his earlier albums.

There's only one song that's a collab with Elton John. My advice is to look the other way 'cause the album is goood. Incredibly raw and sad and heavy. Loooong piano songs. There is (for real) a song about having sex with a snowman. Completely ridiculous/wacky concept and yet Kate manages to make it totally emotionally affecting...such an earnest, devastating, tragic song. Towards the end the lyrics are (seriously) like "in the morning, the sheets are soaking"...."where has he gone?" Holy shit! How could anybody but Kate pull that off?! Her 13-year-old son sings with her on a song, too (fortunately not that one).

State Lines - Hoffman Manor
I'm so glad I listened to this album. I'm terrible at making musical comparisons, but it's like a mix of Tigers Jaw and Brand New. I feel like I'm in high school again.
