I'm fairly new to the experience, but I can't imagine a better Doctor than Matt Smith. He's soooooo good in the role.

Honest question: has it always been this popular in the US? It seems like it's been the big new thing geek thing for the last year or so, but before that I barely heard anyone talk about it.

No, it's just recently got more popular with Matt Smith, I think. I'm not sure if he can be credited with the popularity, it might've just been a coincidence. But it definitely wasn't always that way.

I only started watching a year and a half ago, but I started getting caught up with the episodes on Netflix before watching the ones with Matt Smith's Doctor. I really liked David Tennant's incarnation, and loved the manicness of Christopher Eccleston, but Matt Smith is so so very good.
I'm still trying to process tonight's episode. Oh how I wish we could read River's journal.

I thought the episode was pretty average. When that Mels girl turned up with her mockney accent and GCSE drama certificate myself and Robert were just hoping she'd regenerate into a better actor.
I'm glad they're not killing Rory off quite so much any more though, my heart can't take it.

Am I the only one who knew who Mels was the second she walked on-screen ? They make it out to be this huge shock, but it was obvious to me.

I kind of just decided to finally start watching this, since it's just there with Netflix telling me I'd like it. I'm up to the last Christopher Eccleston episode and I'm kind of sad because I've grown quite fond of him.

The stand alone episodes this season have been quite nice. The wooden dolls in the last episode were quite disturbing and I have to say, if I had seen the episode when I was a little kid, there is no way I would not have been traumatized in a permanent way. Well done.

So, I apparently watched all of series 2 in 2 days, then, I guess? Ah, well. Such a strange show. I miss Eccleston. Maybe if I were spacing episodes out by weeks and series out by months I wouldn't miss him so much, but as it is, I just miss him. Which isn't a knock on Tennant at all. There's just something about Eccleston I love so much. Oh well. Onward through series 3, and the continuing adventures of Ten, then.

I think you'll really like Matt Smith then, P. He reminds me of Eccleston's Doctor quite a bit sometimes.
Also (not like it doesn't take a lot for me to get all weepy over something) but for serious, the end of "The Girl Who Waited"? Tears absolutely running down my face.

I'm going off Matt Smith's Doctor a lot. I know he's the big thing in America right now but honestly, David Tennant still blows him out of the water. It doesn't help that the actual writing back then was so so much better than it is at the moment. I haven't even bothered watching the latest one, because there is nothing making me care about it. New season/last season spoilers, sort of: Like, the whole thing with River song is going NOWHERE. We all know the little girl in the spacesuit was Amy's daughter, we all know someone in the spacesuit shoots the doctor, we all know River Song's been jailed for killing the doctor, and yet ALL THESE PEOPLE WHO DEAL WITH TIME TRAVEL ALL THE FUCKING TIME cannot put the pieces of the puzzle together. It's like, there are really great MOMENTS in each episode, but as a whole they just fall apart. Let's Kill Hitler had some genuinely cringe-worthy moments where the acting and writing didn't work and scenes just fell apart. Conversation between characters used to sound natural and now it doesn't. It's all too forced and cliche. I feel like Doctor Who has always been a very British show, lots of British themes and pride and glory and all that, and now it's a bit like we're pandering to how other countries see us. All the drama and humour and charm has been replaced with this "I've got a gun well i've got a banana LOLOLOLOL HOW DELIGHTFUL SWEETIE!" I know I'm in the minority, but I hope it gets better.

But I am not so convinced that this a puzzle they want to solve. And the Doctor doesn't even really know that there is much of a puzzle to solve yet. I am kind of wondering if some little tidbits of things are going to come rushing back, like remember the Doctor being "dead" on the stairs during "The Big Bang"? And then he disappeared? Wht if that has something to do with it. Or maybe the Doctor that arrived on the beach is another Flesh version of the Doctor? I guess I am content to see where it goes. Maybe it'll be awesome, or maybe it will be meh, who knows. A couple episodes from now and we'll hopefully know.
My assumption is that either something is going to change with regard to the Doctor being killed, or what we saw wasn't really what we saw. Mostly because what is the point of basically saying oh yeah, as soon as Matt Smith is done being the Doctor the show is over because his version of the Doctor is the one who died?

I've only seen one episode of Tennant's, and that only partially. It dealt with some woman and a magical mirror of sorts and was generally a fun watch. When this season ends, I might go back and watch the older runs. I'm a little sad to know that much of the oldest footage is just lost. The weeping angels were my favorite foe thus far. Such an eerie idea! Ha! I just watched that again a few days ago... sooooo scary!

I haven't liked the current season that much, but I liked a lot of the fifth one, so I don't think it's Matt Smith's fault. All the emotional reactions I'm apparently supposed to be having aren't happening though. A part of me thinks that Amy and Rory could've just had their one season as many companions do and that'd be fine. Not that I dislike them, exactly, I've just had enough I guess.

I've worked my way into the heart of series 3 and I just finished watching "Human Nature / Family of Blood."
Along with select episodes from series 1 and series 2, this just kind of made me sad. It made me sad because it is so ridiculously good. Like, by far, some of the best television I've ever watched in my life. I wish television could be this good on a consistent basis, more often.
That's the one thing I'm really starting to get about this show. When it's fun, it's really fun. When it's silly, it's really silly. When it's good, it's amazing. Unfortunately, when it's bad, it's terrible.

I don't know if it was because I was tired already, but the episode tonight didn't really grab me, and I was left at the end wondering what in the world, how did we get here?
Also, after watching some of last season on Netflix, it seems that the episodes on BBC America are cut just enough to make the transitions into and out of commercials horrid. Screws up the pacing.

So, I'm all caught up now. Yay. A little embarrassed by the fact that I've watched everything up to the most recent episode (including specials) in, er..17ish days? I really need to start sleeping more.
Ten grew on me, a lot, by the end. I still have a soft spot for Nine, though. I quite enjoy Eleven! Still prefer Rose, Martha, and Donna to Amy and Rory, though! But I like Rory quite a bit, even though I'm not sure I've ever seen another character that matches Rory in levels existing only to be kicked in the face over and over. All in all, I wasn't the biggest fan of series 5, but I think 6 has more than made up for it. 5 was good, though. Yeah? Yeah.
Regardless, despite some truly godawful, cringeworthy moments, I really do love this show.

Really liked the last episode. Totally thought they'd kill off Craig. It made so much sense. Retrieving the Stetson and the envelopes at the end totally made up for his living (not that I wanted him to die, but that it hit so hard when I thought he did, and his being saved didn't do much for the story).
After the finale, I'm gonna go through 10's run in whatever order they get tivo'd. Sorta like I'm River Song traveling backwards through the Doctor Who universe.

Just got caught up. This half of the season got a lot better (I was sobbing by the end of The Girl Who Waited), but I wasn't blown away by the finale.
Amy & Rory definitely have a while to go though, Karen Gillian just signed for the seventh season.

I loved the jumbled mythology of the finale. There was so much flash without it being too ridiculous (I love my Doctor Who ridiculous, but it can go too far).
Karen Gillan returning only means wonderful things. She and Matt Smith are so wonderful together.

I love the idea of River just dropping in to visit Amy and Rory to hang out and doing a comparing of notes on where they are in their own timelines. I don't know why it never occured to me before that it would probably happen, but it was a sweet moment.
Also, I hate our DVR. It freaked out right at the very end of the handfasting/wedding, and so I don't actually know how the whole thing transpired. An internet search is imminent. Boo DVR! BOOO!
(edit: yay for the internets! Many many boos to the DVR for apparently freezing for almost a minute)

I'm actually..really not happy about the prospect of having Amy and/or Rory stick around for another season.
They both grew on me a lot, but it really feels like it's time to move on.

I think it would be kind of cool for them to be like recurring, secondary companions and have a new full time companion.
edit: especially with how the ending of this series went. Amy and Rory are in a good place and it's been established that they are in contact with River and it would be the epitome of awkward for them to even approach exploring what it means that Amy is the Doctor's mother-in-law.
edit2: but I am very much not ready to have a new Doctor. The next regeneration will be the first for me while I was actually watching the show and not catching up on prior seasons, and I am seriously not ready for that yet.
