This show is fucking awesome.
I'm only two episodes in and I love it. Hopefully this will be my replacement for Lost.

Everyone at Borders ever was obsessed with the books so I finally started reading them about two months ago. Just started the fourth one before the fifth one comes out next month. George R.R. Martin has like a huge cult following and takes forever to release them so it's a big deal hahaha. I highly recommend fans of the show read them!!
The show is sooooo good, everyone is so well cast and like just how I pictured them. Those kids are so talented.
I'm interested to know what you guys who hadn't read the books thought of the most recent episode where something pretty major happened haha. I know when I read it I lost my fucking shit. I still kinda did in the show even though I knew it was coming.

I never fucking saw it coming, even though in retrospect it was pretty inevitable. I was totally floored, though. And holy shit, I am 100% serious when I say that I've never hated any fictional character more than I hate Joffrey. I'm really pissed, because some fuckface on another board spoiled the finale for me. Still excited, though. Do you think I'd be able to skip the first book and just start with the second after watching this first season? I've heard it's extremely faithful.

Couldn't get into it. Horribly, unbelievably misogynist. I got 40 mins into the pilot and couldn't take it any more.

I just marathoned the nine episodes that are out. It's compelling storytelling, and there are some really great, strong characters (and some strong women, hoorah!), and the production values and the soundtrack and the acting is amazing. But for some reason I'm finding it really hard to emotionally engage with anyone. I LIKE and HATE people, but I'm still not actually invested in anyone. Maybe it's because the story is so evenly dispersed among the characters so it's hard to really connect to anyone. I dunno. Maybe it's just me.
I was surprised by the cliffy of episode 9, but I feel like I should have been shocked and sad. I really liked his character, but whenever we jumped to another character I honestly kind of forgot he was there. Same goes for almost everyone. I forget about people and then they turn up again and I'm all 'Oh! You! Whoops!' With the exception of the Khaleesi (she's gorgeous and lovely and I love her), Arya and the Imp.
I dunno. I'm enjoying the story, and I love the soundtrack, but I don't think this show is the ZOMG THIS IS THE BEST SHOW IN YEARS that I keep hearing people hype it as.
And Emma is right on the misogyny in the show. The pilot is by far the worst for it, but it does have a constant, gross presence that I wish could just hurry up and remove itself from all of these critically acclaimed, super popular shows.
EDIT: But I do like that they're willing to kill off main, main characters. It's definitely unpredictable, which is nice.

It's my favorite show currently running. So entertaining. And it has one up on the other HBO shows I've gotten into recently (namely Treme and Boardwalk Empire) because shit actually happens in every episode.

Really really enjoyed the finale; it was an example of cliffhangers done right (DID YOU FUCKING HEAR THAT, THE KILLING?!). Of course, the whole reveal of the dragons (!!!) at the end would have been a hundred times fucking cooler if some fucking shitstain hadn't spoiled that plot point for me, but it was awesome all the same.
Also, way to tease my bloodlust by making it look like Sansa was going to push Joffrey off the ledge. Boo. Still haven't decided whether or not I'm going to start into the books while I wait for the next season.

It was a good ep, and a good finale, but it seems like next season is totally set up for about six different stories that all happen in different areas with different characters. Which could either be really interesting and keep the story moving, or it could be really choppy and disjointed. It's very much the trap True Blood fell into in the last season. I hope not, though. I'm glad Jon Snow stayed with the Knight's Watch, otherwise that story would have seem wasted to me. I'm really on board with his character, and I think that's one of the most interesting storylines for me. I'm totally keen for another look at the white walkers, and I think Rob, while a bit shit now, is going to really come into his own with the help of his mother. I'm enjoying their relationship a lot.
I'm surprised Drogo died, but I guess it makes sense if Daenerys is going to become a kickass super dragon queen. I'm not sure if the dragons were supposed to be a twist or not, because I thought that was kind of obvious with the whole playing with eggs and being super immune to fire. Awesome anyway. Daenerys is one of my favourite characters, not to mention she looks like an albino Emily Blunt.
I love that Arya's been adopted by the Knight's Watch and I hope she and Jon Snow find each other again. And I'm really glad that son of the old king's turned up.
Oh, and fuck yeah Sansa for standing up to her evil shit of a fiancee. She annoyed me in the start of the series, but when she saw her dad and nurses heads I wanted to hug her.
And I love the Imp and Shae. So yeah. Really good ep, I enjoyed it. I still wasn't as sad as I felt I should be during the sad bits. I felt like there were a few points I should have been crying or OH MY GODing but it just didn't happen. I'll be tuning in next season, though.

I am so stoked to see the Knight's Watch storyline next season, probably more than any other subplot.

Possible spoilers, though it's just speculation: IMDB had Gerard Butler listed as the yet-unseen Stannis Baratheon in the credits for last night's episode. An error or leaked casting news? Guess we'll find out.
EDIT: Signs are pointing to it being a hoax. I hope HBO ups the budget for next season. I want to see the kinds of epic battles that happened off-screen in the last half of this season.

Haha yeah, I kind of lol'd when we missed the battle because Peter Dinklage got knocked out, but at the same time it worked better than that trick usually does. Possibly because Peter Dinklage is awesome.

Yeah the misogyny is definitely present but like...I don't think it's portrayed as a good thing at all? Like, since it's set in that sort of medieval-style time it's sort of trying to be accurate about it because like women were treated like shit. In the books a lot of the female characters point out and like, internalize the sexism they face and george sort of makes a point about how much it sucks. Like in the later books there's a character who kicks total ass and can fight better than pretty much all the other male characters which rules (and she isn't portayed as some like hot seductress GASP) and then there's another one who's trying to inherit her family's lands since she's the eldest but she has to deal with everyone saying "no a woman can't hold lands" and she's all "NO FUCK THAT" which is also really neat. And there's arya, the hit girl of fantasy! I love her so much. So I think I can put up with all the misogyny because it's sort of more realism than it is outright misogyny like a lot of current male-focused (redundant?) comedies and such where women are abused and no one thinks twice of it which is more harmful, I think. It has really strong, cool female characters that like, are placed in this shitty sexist world and they know it and don't want to put up with it and actually get a voice instead of just being there for display or to fight over the men they like best or whatever. And dany only gets cooler and cooler. She's another female character that says FUCK YOU to the whole women can't be in power idea. nick I think you could safely do that, yeah. Get to book three! I want to see your reaction so bad haha. I hope they keep the show going through all of the books. oh and cei the books are totally fragmented like that but it works really well. so long as they use the books for structure it shouldn't turn into a confusing mess. it keeps things really interesting and it's super neat when the storylines/different viewpoints overlap in unexpected ways and you're all "OH HEY THAT'S SO AND SO THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT!" hahah. OH and nick that's like the exact text about Joffrey that I sent to my boyf after that scene too. I'm SO glad he's sooooooo fun to hate in the show too. Absolutely perfect casting. What a little prat.

I think you're right Addie in that the women's reaction to all the misogyny (and a surprising amount of the men) makes it far more bearable to watch. But that isn't really present in the pilot episode, as it's mostly just Daenerys getting raped by Drogo and her brother (at least it's strongly implied she's being raped by her brother) and so on so I can see why Emma switched off. But yeah, I do enjoy most of the female characters journeys (that we've seen so far) and how strong and multi-dimensional most of them are - and how different they all are from each other. I also like that the sex workers seem really empowered and there's no scenes I can even think of where any of them are even disrespected. So it's a nice change from, I have to bring it up again, Rome which absolutely fucking REVELS in the misogyny and gives very little dimension to any of the women, and has... the main hero of the show try to murder his wife for being raped. His wife then kills herself so he won't murder her and then we're supposed to feel sorry for him or something. Oh, and his best friend, who is our other hero, is yelling at a slave girl who then goads him into raping her (yes, that's how the scene is portrayed and it's so, so horrible but it's supposed to be sexy), then murders his pregnant wife, then they get together and then he murders her. These are the good guys. And at no point in the series does anyone consider this might be wrong. This show got rave reviews. Ugh. Addie you've got me super curious about the books. I might give them a look once I have less work to get through. Also want more Jon Snow because he's just lovely.

jon snow is SOOOOO attractive, oof. and yeah the pilot is the worst of it. and again it's to make you REALLY REALLY HATE viserys for treating her like shit and putting her in that situation. it's not portraying it as good or okay at all. him getting "crowned" later is sooooo satisfying after all that omg. such a great scene. and wtf gross to that rome stuff. that's the other cool thing, none of the like "hero" type characters (many of which ARE women, also rare) pull shit like that. it's the characters you're clearly supposed to hate that treat women the worst. I would be waaay annoyed if any of the starks or tyrion or dany etc got away with stuff like that and no one batted an eye. they're all admirable because they're so AGAINST stuff like that. like i'm biased because i love the books but i also don't think i could love something that was super misogynistic haha. part of why i love them is because of the rare portrayal of strong smart women in leading roles who can kick ass without having to being a sex object. and MULTIPLE women like that, which is even more rare.

Oh, fucking seriously. That crown scene was amazing. And unrelated, but Viserys looks like a blonde version of my old FWB. Hood of the neighbours car guy. It creeped me out something chronic.
Jon Snow actually reminds me a lot of Orlando Bloom in the first pirates. All hot and naive and genuine with awesome hair. When he said he was still a virgin because he didn't want to get a girl pregnant I wanted to give him a bit of a cuddle.
I'm glad Tyrion is taking Shae/Shay to Kings Landing with him. I want them to fall in love and be happy forever but I suspect Joffrey or his dad will do SOMEthing awful to one of them.
And oh my god, seriously looking forward to Sansa being super passive aggressive to Joffrey next season. I hope she pushes him off a building.

Can't wait for the next season, although I've already forgotten loads of what happens in the second book. Stupid memory. As for the misogyny talk...(spoiler for book/show differences) I don't know why they had to have Drogo rape her! I mean, seeing as she was basically sold to him, it was pretty much rape anyway, but they made it violent rape, which it wasn't in the book. The scene was about how she was surprised at how tender he could be and blah blah blah. Sort of annoying. Not that he would be so great anyway, seeing as how he's cool with rape and murder and all that when it's not someone like her, but that was unnecessary anyway. In a general sense, I'll admit to not thinking overmuch about how women are treated in the series, beyond thinking that having their points of view be such big, important parts is great. I'm resigned to the fact that, any time an author wants to portray a gritty, unkind world, it's always going to involve treating women like shit. I guess it's just too hard to figure out intense injustices that don't involve women being raped at some point. Haven't read the fifth book yet because I bought the paperback boxset. I'm gonna wait til I get my tax return, 'cause I want a Kindle, haha.

Amused reading all my posts about not loving any character because I love almost ALL of them now haha. Can't wait for Season Two. I need Brienne.

Post by Vixo on Jan 23, 2012 19:30:54 GMT -5
Yeah, Brienne's gonna be awesome, hopefully.
Looks like they cast another skinny, pretty actress to fill her role, though. I mean, I'm sure she won't be portrayed that way, but there are big parts about how she's more buff than a lot of men (Jaime, specifically) and that clearly isn't going to be the case in the show. Unless they CGI her some muscles or something.
It doesn't matter too much, I guess. I mean, Peter Dinklage is too handsome for Tyrion, but he nails it and is awesome. "Hollywood ugly" is good enough, I guess. It's also possible book Tyrion isn't totally hideous so much as everyone in the books is a jerk who is bigoted against dwarfs. Having watched the show before getting the books, imagining Dinklage as Tyrion has made me go "Aw, come on, really, people? Poor Tyrion," in that regard.

Yeah, I think 'not stunningly gorgeous' is the best Hollywood can do for plain-unnattractive characters. And yet Renly is nowhere near as sexy as he's supposed to be. Maybe she'll be bulking up for the role and they'll be make-upping her down to plainness though. Interested in how they're going to do Tyrion's face once he loses half of it.
Also wondering how much Jaime will even be in this season considering he's in a cell for all of the book. There's enough interactions for him to have maybe a scene or two unless they write some new scenes or steal some of his story from Book 3.
Which they might be doing anyway because Kit Harrington hinted that Jon might have a love interest this season and Ygritte and Jon don't get sexy until Book 3. Unless he's just referring to the scene where he catches her and lets her go.

Yeah, Renly's kind of funny looking in the show. I'm cool with funny looking, most of the people I find attractive are funny looking in some way, but I thought he was supposed to be all pretty hair and gallantry.

The fact that Brienne is supposed to be plain is one thing, but it bugged the shit out of me how not a single character could even mention her name (or think about her) without mentioning how ugly she is. WE GET IT.
I looked up who was playing her, and I think she can make it work. She's also REALLY tall.

Yeah, the way people think about Brienne and Tyrion make me go "Ugh, jerks jerks jerks." (More spoilery things for anyone who hasn't read the books, re: point of view. Basically, seeing who "gets a chapter" (or a million) can be pretty surprising if you're not spoiled for it!) I like how Jaime grew to respect her, though. He's someone who, in the first book, I never expected to like at all. As it stands for right now, the only characters I haven't come to like a little since getting to their chapters are Cersei and Theon. . .that I remember, anyway. And Cersei's are still interesting and I can kind of understand where she's coming from, but ugh, she's still so. . .ugh.
|
|
|
Post by Cei on Jan 23, 2012 23:34:02 GMT -5
I don't like Cersei and Theon as people so much, but I love the shit out of them as characters. Same for Jaime. I'll never think he's a great guy but his and Cersei's chapters are some of my absolute favourites to read. And as much of a shit Jaime is it does suck that he saved the entire city and everyone in it from horrible flaming death and gets forever maligned as Kingslayer for it.
I'm also a bit obsessed with finding out more about Rhaegar though WAS HE THE BAD GUY OR WAS ROBERT? It's looking more and more like Robert. The rebellion is so interesting WHAT DID LYANNA MAKE NED PROMISE AND WILL WE EVER FIND OUT?? There's a theory that Jon is Lyanna and Rhaegar's son which I could totally get behind.
