So, we have finally finished watching the entire series. It's been kinda weird to see some of the newer stuff that barely gets played in syndication. I haven't seen anything season 7 or later since they originally aired.
Oh man. Such a great show. Seasons 1-5 are really great. Seasons 6 and 7 were good. Season 8 was fair, and season 9 was just downright crappy.
I really can't get over how crappy season 9 was. The finale was such a bummer. I still remember how many people were pissed off at how bad it was. Watching it rekindled my hatred. I'm not even mad at the twist so much as just mad at how the entire season played out and then ended quality-wise. It's almost as if they just decided in the offseason to make everything ridiculous. Continuity flew out the window. Characters came and disappeared. Plot lines went nowhere or disappeared. And to top it off, everything we'd been watching had been a lie. Really? Darlene was with Mark and Becky was with David? No. Fuck that. That's like 7 seasons of Mark and 6 of David. It's one thing to say they were fictionalized, but you can't just switch it. It's like your dad telling you he had a family before you were born when you're 40 years old. So, Roseanne Connor is a writer, huh? Well, no one would ever buy that shitty book.
OK, enough with the negativity.
I love Roseanne. I love the humor. I love the sentimental parts. I think Roseanne is a great matriarch. The roles are perfectly cast. I hate Becky so much, but I think it's because Lecy Goranson played her perfectly. Sarah Chalke was good, but not nearly as memorable. Sara Gilbert was my ideal girl growing up. She was awesome as Darlene. John Goodman slays in anything he's ever been in. His role as Dan is no exception. Michael Fishman was cute at first. He never quite learned to act, but DJ was probably written for him. I have even grown to love Jackie and Bev in ridiculous amounts. I never liked either when I was growing up, but I've learned to appreciate them so much more.
By the way, noticed Norm MacDonald did some writing and editing in some season 2 or 3 episodes. What?

My favorite moment of season 9: "Can you imagine having a job with the word 'butt' in it?" - Mark, in regards to a butler

I love Roseanne and Dan and Aunt Jackie and Darlene. And I liked Becky before Mark got in the picture. I never liked Mark or David. I love this show so much. I agree with you on the later seasons, though, but I still watch them when they're on tv and it just makes me go wtf/ every time.

One thing that pissed me off about the later episodes was that they started using the credit roll to show serious stuff and stuff that was supposed to imply continuity.
Like, the fact that Dan has the heart attack at the credit roll and it's followed by that harmonica music just totally kills it. How are you supposed to take that seriously? It's like watching The English Patient with "Yakkety Sax" playing in the background.
Looking back, the cameos are nuts. Like, Tim Curry as the crooked house flipper. Whaaaaat? Ellen as the therapist.

I haven't seen Roseanne in ages, but I love this show so much. I grew up watching a lot of it, and I spent a good deal of my "sick" days in Freshman year staying home and watching this. The fact that it portays something approximating the families that i knew growing up is really comforting to me when I'm feeling bummed out about things, haha. And I remember wishing like crazy that I could have a sister like Darlene when I was a kid.

the best episode is where they smoke some old weed and jackie thinks she's shrinking in the tub.

Funny thread timing. One of the weekly online articles I read is by a former writer for Roseanne, and he's in the midst of recounting some of the lessons he learned from working on the show. The odds... what are they?

To be fair, someone probably contacted him because of its resurgence in popularity due to Netflix. So I'd say the odds are pretty good. Haha.
Dude, Carrie, that's the only episode we rewatched while going through the series. And we watched it 3 times. Haha.

I think I was more annoyed by the new baby storyline than any of the ridiculous lottery shit.
I wish Roseanne Barr were more like Roseanne Conner.

I love this show so much. The entire family dynamic is perfect. I used to watch the late night reruns of this all the time, but now it's always The Nanny playing(UGH).
The Darlene and David relationship was always my favorite. As far as cameos go I love going back and watching JGL play the dweeb "friend" of DJ.

Haha that wasn't really a cameo though. He was an up-and-coming actor at the time. I liked his future Angels in the Outfield costar Jay O Saunders as Ziggy too.
And Marla Hooch was at their lottery party. WTF?

I wish Roseanne Barr were more like Roseanne Conner. Yeah. I started reading her latest book and at first it was great and then it was so, so not great.

How could you have never seen the reruns of the later seasons? It's usually on TV Land on a constant loop of the series.
But yes, the last season blew.
Dan is my ideal person ever. I still watch it sometimes but honestly I'm not up late enough anymore to catch it. Plus since I'm in Eastern Time now, many of the 'prime time' shows I do want to watch are already later.

I have never had a cable/dish service that's had TV Land. Also, I haven't had cable in like 5 years. Before that, I never caught newer episodes on TNT or wherever they played. And I never see the reruns on MyNetwork. They normally only play stuff from the first five.

Haha I like that you bumped this thread just for that.
Another thing, how obvious is it which movie John Goodman was filming during the last season or two? Hahaha. Is that question "OVER THE LINE!!!!"?

I had never watched Roseanne until Casey and I started watching on Netflix instant, and we've been powering through it (such a good show!), but I just saw your post about... in a later season they try to pretend that Mark/Darlene were dating all along?! WHAT! That's fucking bull!

Haha, you should just not watch season 9.
It pretty much negates the entire series--every character acts different, people come in and out, shit doesn't make sense, and the ending basically says the series was a lie.
It'll piss you off so much. Beyond words. And everything about it sucks. Like, even the opening credits will irk the fuck out of you.

Casey still doesn't believe me that they make it seem like Mark/Darlene were dating all along - I keep telling her to read your post again and she keeps saying that you must've typed it wrong because it's just TOO ridiculous, haha.

It is just the stupidest thing I have ever heard. How is it even possible? Becky married him! Darlene dated his brother! It was a major plot point!

That's why everyone was pissed. It's a variation on the "it was just a dream" which translates into "we ran out of ideas and all our good writers quit a couple seasons ago."
In the last couple minutes of the last episode, Roseanne talks about how Mark/Darlene and Becky/David were couples but the way she wrote it made more sense and that Jackie was actually a lesbian and Dan died at the wedding. Total cop out. Everything we watched up to that point was a lie.
