My sister loves Harry Potter and recently bought all the books and told me I should read them. I got halfway through the first and wasn't interested enough to finish. I've seen all the movies for some reason but I've really enjoyed them. I don't have the books to compare them to so I don't notice any details that got left out or anything, which probably helps.

i love harry potter so much.
and totally what casey said, part of what makes Mark Reads Harry Potter so awesome is that he just has NO IDEA. oh god it is beautiful. i can't wait for him to get to book three and freak out all over the place.
as for the films, i loved HBP really, really hard, and i like the new dumbledore a lot.

Book 4, 5, and 6 all deserve to be split into two films way more than 7. Don't get me wrong; 7 is one of my favorites of the series, but it is also one of the easiest to condense into a movie. All they do is walk! Even the trees walk!... wait...

The battle can be wrapped up in 20 mins easily. All I'm really saying is that this book is less deserving plotwise to receive a double-movie. They could have just extended it to 200 mins. or something if they really wanted to.
Then again, I'm betting these movies will have tons of flashback explanations to fill in all the plot movie 6 decided to exclude.

Definitely. 7 also should since the battle of Hogwarts needs to be 100% perfect. I love Harry Potter so so so so so much. It is ridiculous. I think I have read all of them 3-4 times. This summer might be time for another reading. I have not read all of Mark's blog on it--just a few chapters so far, but I need to get to that. What I read so far was brilliant.

I love Harry Potter so much. SO MUCH. I was very young when I first started reading it. Actually, my mom read me the first book because my reading capabilities were pretty shaky. But yeah, pretty much right from the beginning they've been some of my favorite books ever. I remember absolutely HATING the fifth book because the thing with Sirius totally destroyed my soul forever, but now it is probably my second favorite after PoA.
I love Mark's wrong guesses. And his right guesses, too actually. It is delightful to see someone who knows nothing about the series discover it. I have no idea how he is keeping himself from reading the entire series in a week.
Also, I agree with whoever mentioned being unhappy with Gary Oldman playing Sirius. One of my favorite actors, but to me he really doesn't fit the part.

This was meant for Mark's blog, but I had problems joining buzznet, so:
The "English" thing always got to me as well, but I find in almost every literary use of non-human creatures that going straight to English just makes for cleaner story-telling. To connect back to Star Wars, its great that Lucas actually DOESN'T force all entities to speak English (the Hutts, etc.), but in regards to key characters, breaking that barrier begs to cause problems in story-telling, or at least draws attention away from what really matters: the plot. That said...
OMFG DOBBY IS SOOOOOOOOO ANNOYING! WILL HE REDEEM HIMSELF AS A CHARACTER???
RON IS MORE OF A FUCKING STUD THEN HAN SO... YA, I'M KIDDING.

I'm glad Mark realized just how this is going to take if he keeps doing one chapter per day and decided to start trying to get more than one per day out. Especially when you consider the fact that the books get significantly longer after PoA.

Mark's analysis is bringing to light a variety of thoughts I glossed over in my time with the books. Having to take this chapter by chapter makes it much more interesting to chop apart plot-points and ponder on what they mean. Also, although I've felt for a long time that JKR did an excellent job incorporating important ties between every book, Mark's guesses just show how well he actually laid the foundation and details of her story.
AND OMG HERMIONE GIF PARTY!!!

Haha, I love the part where it says "A motion picture event for a generation". As awesome as the trailer is, I'm still a bit skeptical. My appreciation for the other movies can only really be measured in varying degrees of dislike and indifference. We'll see though. I hope they managed to get this one right. Although, I am highly disturbed at how much they seemed to have changed Voldemort's nose in this version. Creepy. Has the Harry vs. Voldemort rap battle been posted a million times before? I'm posting it again anyway, because its so full of nerdy awesomeness. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTHn5oFPmi8&feature=fvwAnd also, I love Mark's blog. I can't wait until he starts the third book. I want him to dig Lupin and Sirius as much as I do! Edit - Ok, the Snape rap is pretty awesome too. I'm going to have to stop before I spend all night looking this shit up. www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-L5eg26htA

Ya, I don't really like any of the movies all that much, but the diehard HP fan in me gets overworked for each film before it comes out. All in all, they aren't the worst things in the world, but even when observing them as separate entities from the books, they lack in a variety of places. Most of the original teacher casting is so spot on, though: Robbie Coltrane, Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman... each is perfect as the teacher they play(ed) and have entirely usurped any versions of the characters I imagined from the books alone.
EDIT: Holy shit, Potter rap was awesome. "If you look under my cloak, you'll see my Hagrid-sized balls!"
