You guys, her new album is ridiculous. Someone asked me to describe it yesterday and I said "um it's kind of this dance-y jazzy like...acid trip thing" because The ArchAndroid reduces you to syntax of a five year old apparently. Also Cold War is the best song EVER WRITTEN EVER. So download it!PS she's fucking adorable and wears tuxedos all the time.

Is this the new hipster shit to like?

It certainly seems that way Eds. I dig it so far though. I really get an OutKast, Love Below kind of vibe from it. Funky, jazzy, little bit of hip hop.

Hipsters seem to be too cool for Janelle Monae anyway? Maybe because she seems so hipster-y, and hipsters don't want to be all obvious about their hipsterdom. Conundrum.

Sorry, I just really don't dig it, and people are so up her ass its annoying. It might just not be my style of music.
I don't think its cool to hate on her, all my friends love her, and its really annoying to listen to her songs.
Bigger ups to those who do like this, I just don't like it. To me, its no different than 95% of pop/r&b fusion out there (if thats not what it is, forgive me, because I can't get 20 seconds through a song to figure it out).

That's your problem, Edson, you need to sit down and listen to the whole album before judging it, for real.

If I immediately dislike something, why bother forcing myself to listen? I've never ever just had a song/album/artist that I never enjoyed just "click". In any case, I listened to the song with the video in the first post, and still don't like it. Oh well, not my cup of tea.

It's because the album overall pretty diverse and nuanced, which is a big part of my interest with her.
And by pretty diverse I mean it sounds like Billie Holiday and Beyonce and David Bowie and Funkadelic and The Beatles and Michael Jackson and more. All without sacrificing quality, cohesion, or individuality.

Well, at first, my opinion was very much like Edson's. I really just didn't dig it at all. Sure, I thought she was talented and super cute, but the music just didn't do anything for me. However, after listening to her music a good amount of times, I'm actually starting to get into it. I like it. I don't think I'm as crazy about her as some of you guys, but I do enjoy her music.

Edson, come on. You have like a 100% complete Portugal. The Man collection, don't throw stones haha. Haha. Calling others hipsters when they're hipsters is the greatest thing ever. What a tangled web of hips they weave. She's growing on me. My girlfriend showed me this video just because she loved the dancing and now she's obsessed, which means I hear it all damn day. Some songs are amazing and others bore the hell out of me. I agree about "Cold War" and "Come Alive."

Hipster Rule 1: All hipsters hate all other hipsters and will call them on being hipsters.
Hipster Rule 2: All hipsters will deny being hipsters.

"Tightrope," "Cold War," and "Come Alive" are the only ones I can really get into. It gets boring when she slows things down (see also: TV On the Radio).

Also, in case some of you guys missed it, but here's her performance from last night at the BET awards. She killed it.
