And graphic novels!
I went to the new comic book store that opened down the street from my house today and picked up Walking Dead: Volume 1. It's my first comic/graphic novel ever, but I'm already halfway through and it fucking rules.
Any recommendations for someone completely new? What're your favourites? What should I not get? Artists? Writers? DC vs. Marvel?

The intro triumvirate of comics is generally Watchmen/Dark Knight Returns/Sandman, so I'd go with those. Alan Moore usually ranges from good to high literature, so pretty much anything he's done is worth reading after Watchmen. I'd say either Miracleman or From Hell, depending on if you want something more comic-booky or more literary.
Also, there's no such thing as graphic novels. Only comics.

Asterios Polyp by David Mazzuchelli is a masterpiece, check that out. For superhero books, you need All-Star Superman and Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison, Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, Kraven's Last Hunt by J.M. DeMatteis, and Daredevil: Born Again by Frank Miller.
These are all either miniseries or self-contained stories, it takes a while to get familiar with continuity or to collect an entire series. That's why I'd advise against getting Sandman unless you have a lot of money right now because it's 10 books for the whole main series plus 1 more for Endless Nights.

Oh for sure, Y is awesome too, as is Ex Machina. If it says Brian K. Vaughan on the sleeve, it's worth buying.

I've been getting into Bluewater Comics lately. They do these awesome biographies as well as the Vincent Price comics, among others. I'm not so much into superhero comics.
I also just finished a graphic novel called The Alcoholic. It was alright. Amusing, but not worth what I paid for it.

Anyone else read The Pro? I thought it was pretty hilarious. You have to have a weird/fucked sense of humor to enjoy it, though I think.

Been reading a lot of Batman lately. Peter Milligan's three issue arc on Batman called "Dark Knight, Dark City" is awesome, he makes Gotham a genius loci and has Batman fight robot zombies and give a baby a tracheotomy.

I'm not much of a comic book reader, but I've been getting into DC a fair bit. They have a ton of JLA comics at the library.

Oh my god, please tell me those JLA books say Grant Morrison on the spine. Morrison's run on JLA is everything good about comics, not to mention it made my fanboy dreams come true when a certain Vertigo character named Daniel appeared to help the Justice League fight Starro.

Yes! There is one story I read that I can't remember the name of, but it made me cry, it was so good and so sad. I think the main plot was that family of the JLA members were under attack, and there's a scene where Atom is travelling through a phone line to save his wife? Does that sound familiar?

JLA families being under attack sounds like Tower of Babel, where Ra's Al-Ghul steals Batman's parents' bodies out of their graves, and that part with the Atom is like, they're visiting an alternate universe version of him where he's a guy who runs this planet and he's using their technology to figure out how to bring his wife back? I vaguely remember it but I haven't read it in so long.

Just finished rereading Watchmen. Perhaps the single most symbolically unified work since Eliot's The Wasteland. It really is that good. every aspect ties into the central images of the story, and when you learn what they actually all mean, it's just such a cavernous revelation. The movie was a fun little thing, not super deep. but my god, the comic is just...an absolute masterstroke.

Do you guys read characters in the voices of their cartoon or movie equivalents? The entire Batman cast for me is pretty much from the Animated Series, I read the Kingpin and Spider-Man in their voices from the 90s Fox cartoon, and Lex Luthor is Kevin Spacey.

I re-read The Dark Knight Returns and Year One last week! such great reads! I've also been reading Thor from the beginning but I'm having a little trouble getting into the comic at this point. I'm still reading the Journey into Mystery issues though. Hope it picks up later.

Just read it. I can't decide which one was better, they were both so ludicrous and awesome. One of my favorite things was that Grizzly Shark doesn't have legs, it just floats through the air like it's swimming.
