This album rules. Surprised to see it on the NOMB. Oh, how I love old Cowboy songs. Awesome. You should check out Smithsonian Folkways' "Cowboy Songs on Folkways" collection, if you haven't. It's great. It has some hollers and brag talk and poems and stuff besides just awesome songs. I collect folkways records and study Texas history so I am very much into this type of thing.

I just finished watching Hype! and about halfway through I had the bright idea to make a list of the bands I liked so I got down these three
Seaweed - Four Flop - Whenever You're Ready Fastbacks - Never Fails, Never Works
but I don't really know anything about these bands, maybe someone (Stephie?) can suggest better starting points for them?

I'll check that out.

You should definitely try; he's really good live. I saw him when he was touring for Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle. He sort of just gets up on stage and plays super intensely.
Anyway, I also got these records for super cheap: Bruce Springsteen - Tunnel of Love Beat Happening - Dreamy The 1978 Tennessee Mountain Bluegrass Festival and some Alan Lomax field recordings from England
